50km shakedown test

Post

I noticed that Martin Whitmarsh mentioned '50km shakedown tests' in his interview with ITV.

Can someone explain to me what these are?

Pre-race systems/sanity check, usually because the car has had a complete rebuild.

Did he mention it being exempt from the testing rule?

I saw that interview somewhere else too I believe, and I don´t recall him saying anything about the shakedown being included with testing limiations. Since privately held shakedowns are limited to very low mileage, exempting them from the normal testing event where mileage is limited per season.

But thats off the top of my head.

And maybe the thread name should be changed to something like ´Comment by Martin Whitmarsh¨, due to the actual topic not being about him but about what he said. That´s my simple suggestion anyway.

Thanks for your replies.

I will try and be more careful about topic names in future as I can see it is a little misleading! :-)

there is no restriction beyond not putting more than 50km on any one chassis. It can be more than one chassis. it is not a part of the testing restrictions...never has been. some teams do tend to use this free allowance to cary out aero tests, rather than actually needing to do systems checks....its all part of the game

Ferrari has shakedown tests before every race (if they are not back-to-back or fly-away races). They are conducted by Marc Gene, usually, at Maranello. So, McLaren isn't the only team doing it
