Yes, the height of this front wing stunned me too!

Looking at the rest of the video.. so on one hand we have Ocon who claims that they are close, but not yet on the downforce level of 2018 and on the other hand we have RBR who claimed 2-3 months ago that they already were at the level of last year?
it will all depend on how much drag comes with the down-force.

We really don't know what downforce levels Ocon was referring to from 2018. When he started driving the W10 on simulator, which was in Decmeber after his Force India season was over, the reference could likely have been the downforce levels of W09 at the end of the season. What Marko claims is, at the time when he gave this statement, was that, they are at last summer's downforce levels. I am not sure if there is a clear reference here.

Does that say, they would reach close to the season ending RB14's downforce levels, when they hit the track in Melbourne? They kept improving the car in the second half of the year, which made them genuine contenders for race wins. So, it's a bit unclear.

They are running on wets which are a thicker tire due to the tread. So the car will look higher than when it's on the normal tires.

It might be that they are hiding their rake. Its possible that they might lower the front suspension in race configuration.

They may have groves tyres but I don’t believe they are running on wets, cars have to be fitted with special promo tyres when running outside of official sessions & tests

The promo tyres are just a special compound, and this wasn't a promo/demo day, but a filming day. Valtteri ran wets early in the day and Lewis ran regular slick later in the day.

It seems like it would be very draggy, but it appears like Merc wants inwash at the front wing so the can use the bat wing, snow plow, barge boards and turning veigns to work the air to death. I can't see how they would get that much flow turned around the side pods.
Honestly, those 3 radial wings they have around the sidepod inlets are the most interesting pieces to me (imo the upper two are very similar to this lower) - along with the high front wing they must be intending to push as much air into the bargeboards as possible and use the bb's and front edge of the floor for front downforce as much as they are the front wing itself.

I think he's referring to the fact that the main plane joins nearly half way up the endplate rather than the fact that the whole car is high.

@dans79: True.. drag is a hell of a thing. :)

@GPR-A: You're right. Further information on to which time of last season Ocon was referring to when talking about downforce levels would have been needed to draw conclusions.

The height of the wing is effectively measured from the both the y250 area and the the endplates, so the height at which the main plane joins the endplate can't be the height of the wing. See https://www.f1technical.net/features/21879

The entire front wing outside the y250 section is meant to fit within a bounding box, but in all photo's so far (aside renders), the Merc front wing appears artificially high. This might have been exaggerated because Bottas ran a wet tyre, but with Lewis on a dry tyre, in some instances, the front wing seems to lie outside the bounding box provided by the regs. That is why I suggested that they might be running the front suspension higher than in race config in order to hide their rake (or perhaps, something altogether different).

I think the wing looks high because they have a lot of camber in the outer portion. The leading edge is high but the lower surface then gets closer to the road.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.
