According to SoyMotor, Sainz did a 1:17.503 on C3 before his C4 stint where he did an 1:17:144. If he was on C3 for 1:17.5 that is a good time. Also may show that difference between tire compounds is smaller than Pirelli seems to think (0.3s not 0.6s).

Link for data: https://soymotor.com/articulos/analisis ... ion-960921

EDIT: Looking at their live stream from yesterday, they said it was C4 in the live stream only in the data they show that it was C3. Probably best to believe live stream as C3 is hard to mistake for C4.

So disregard 1:17:5 on C3, it probably didn't happen.
On this track you’re right, the softer tyres are probably closer than 0.6s. It’s a high-wear track at Spain (last year Pirelli didn’t even bring the hyper or ultrasofts) due to the long radius corners at the start of the lap so the softer tyres are giving up after 3/4’s of a lap resulting in a comparable S3 split with the harder compounds; on smoother surfaces though (such as Sochi or Abu Dhabi) the difference could feasibly be greater than 0.6s

Norris not as fast in speed traps, could this mean a higher downforce setup compared to previous fast times?

But, anyway, the speed is high compared to others.

I've only really being paying attention to the S1 speedtrap, it's unaffected by DRS, after full throttle through T2+3. For McLaren their best has remained unchanged the whole test, it's always been one of the highest aswell. While their sector times have become quicker in S2 + S3. So I think it's true what the drivers are saying that the team has successfully optimised the car to work throughout the lap. I'm going to naively say that they are still running the same engine modes as they have from the start, purely from the S1 speedtrap.

Norris not able to improve a lot with C5, 1:17:5.

He did a 1:17:8 on C3.

F1.Com:
More of the same from the team in Orange - Norris puts his MCL34 on top of the leaderboard with a fruity 1m 17.838s, just one tenth off his quickest time from Tuesday.

Sainz claimed McLaren wouldn't be on pole in Melbourne - but they are certainly causing a few raised eyebrows up and down the pit lane with this turn of pace.

More positive vibes...

That 18.0 from Hamilton with C2 is probably equivalent to 16.0 in C5. Right?

We still more or less 0.8s behind (if it's real, is very good).
To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone. ― Bruce McLaren

Lando also had set a 1:18:748 earlier on the C2 tyre, which aligns with your estimation.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
