Haas isn’t that far away though... 0.5 seconds from the GRO isn’t that bad considering that the Haas car suits Melbourne (like last year)... Similar situation to Mercedes, which I don’t believe they really are 0.7 ahead of Ferrari in the rest of the tracks

True, I believe McLaren will be closer on more aero dependant tracks. Still a decent chunk to find though. I also expect McLaren to outdevelop them and most of the midfield, if the car is as good a solid base as it appears.
Exactly! The car still has some balance issues and they are just starting their development program for this year... Sainz should have also been up there and who knows, he could have beat Lando’s time

If the team had a as a goal to get into Q3 during the first part of the season, they can tick that box!

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, this is the first GP... Still 20 more to go... For now, let’s enjoy the race! Hopefully Lando will have a good start and if the team gets a decent strategy, he may be able to jump one or two of the Haas... He is a good racer, so expecting more from him tomorrow.

So glad I have Lando on my Fantasy Team! Haha

I noticed a huge difference from Mercedes at about 1.8. Can that huge margin be covered?
That's a couple of seasons worth of development to close that gap. We're just at beginning of that journey.

This season? Doubtful... More interesting is the gap to RBR, that one could be covered... But Melbourne isn’t a representative track, so it’s too soon to draw any conclusions from it in regards to the actual gap to the front (it’s pretty doubtful that Ferrari is 0,7 seconds behind Mercedes... They had a similar gap in Melbourne last year and ended up ahead in the Championship by mid season).

Forget melborne the next race in bahrain will give us the real picture and i think mclaren will be closer to the tops teams this car is good for fast tracks

Is there a stint data?

What should tell you to not jump with conclusions is the fact that Ferrari on soft tires is P5 and P9. Does it mean Ferrari is 4-5th team on the grid? No. Team will probably know today how they stand (through analysis), but we will not know it until qualifying and race.
i admire your optimism but lets meet tomorrow and here you again after quali. bottom line is mclaren is at the back.
So let's meet.

Yeah, no need to jump to conclusions, this could be misleading for the season just like Alonso's race last year was, but it's encouraging. Team seems to be checking all the boxes, going slowly and developing the car in the right areas. Very pumped about Q3, especially given that Sainz was unlucky. I can only imagine the doom and gloom if Norris didn't manage Q2 as a rookie, and Sainz gets caught up in Kubica's puncture.

Looking forward to tomorrow, Sainz should probably have some good fights.

Great job for the Team.
Lando was superb. Sainz would be there also if he hadn't that Kubica incident.
IMO Mclaren has the best Aero of the midfield (and its not even refined yet). Renault may not be up there yet with Mercedes or Ferrari Party modes, and this helps teams like Haas or Alfa Romeo in Qualifying. I think it will be a lot closer on race engine modes and after seeing qualifying, that rumor in the paddock that Mclaren may have the fastest race pace in the middlefield, well it may not be that far away from the truth.

I don’t thin that even Bahrain will give a clear picture... There is a reason why historically, the order hasn’t been clear until after Spain

Mercedes gained 1.6 from Q1 to Q3 huge difference

This is irrelevant.
Since we have a Mclaren and a Mercedes in Q3 with same tires going flat out. Only Q3 matters regarding one lap pace.
Maybe Mercedes have a more powerfull and extreme party mode, that they can use fewer times in order to keep the engine safe.
Anyway race pace, with race engine modes, it will be more interesting to watch.

No man the fast tracks always give us the real order so i think that the top 3 will steal remain as here in melbourne but with less gap and mclaren will battle Hass and Raikko in bahrain for best of the rest

Im very happy for the results in qual. (Sainz was held up so his time does not indicate real performance.

Looks like we start from middle of the midfield and playing catch up to Hass while competing with Alfa and Renault. Good start, right on target.

I'd keep an eye also on Racing Point as well. Checo made it into Q3, with a car that they've not quite broken into. It was the most updated car, as they understand it more, they'll go quicker. Really glad Key starts soon. Hopefully they'll keep going in the right direction. I'm hoping for a clean start and good race for Lando, and a quick start for Carlos, he's like Fernando in that regard, quick off the line.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Yeah Cocacola looks a bit odd there. Mclaren really like plain sidepods dont they, shame it wasnt a bigger deal to put them on that nice blank space

I don't understand why they haven't just filled the sidepods with "McLaren 720S" or something like that, if you took the Red Bull "Sponsors" off the RB and TR those cars would look very bare too
