Here, Melbourne Qualy starts at 3:00am. I asked my wife to wake me up and soon I was trying to understand how Sainz got out in Q1. In my wildest dreams I expect a 1.23.0 by our car at this track. When Lando did that 22.7 to get through Q1 I I start to cry, stronger than me. That sequence of laps always improving under pressure was sublime. Great way to start the season.

Tough times when McLaren fans start crying because of getting through Q1. I don’t understand the enthusiasm. We got beaten today by a team that started in F1 just a few years ago and that has only a portion of our budget. We are 1.8 seconds adrift from pole. No chance of fighting any of the top 3 teams. This is McLaren’s 7th successive bad start to the season. No reason for clapping.

Norris has been the only shining light today..

You forgot to add, the sky is falling... This is the best McLaren has qualified in Melbourne since 2014, with a car that design was lead by a guy who was officially hired in September, and hasn't been actively working in F1 for a few years. We all know why the new team is ahead, and that's because of the marriage with "that old team". The car has more sponsors than it's had in a very long time, blue chip sponsorship like BAT, Coca-Cola, Dell. Maybe we should wake you up in a couple of years when, hopefully McLaren is winning again. Because, obviously, you don't have the appetite for the journey ahead.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Wait, P8 on genuine pace only being beaten by what can be described as a Ferrari but with extra steps after a massive restructure that hasn't even taken place yet and an entire car redesign is a bad start to the season?!

It has been a never ending journey so far. And every year that we are not up there, our chances of ever getting back up there decrease. It is hitting the budget we so desperately need of competing with the top teams.

Every excuse you make, I have been making for years.
“Oh, Honda just needs more team, wait for next season”
“Prodromou is just in, wait for next season when he has worked on our car from the beginning”
“It’s just early season, and it’s not giving a honest representation of what this car is capable of, next race will be better.”
If this, than that.

The same arguments are being made every time, it is starting to feel like Groundhog Day. After 6 years of struggling, producing poor cars, one management reshuffle after the other, false promises and lame excuses, there comes a time where you need to perform. The moment we start accepting McLaren is behind newcomers, and is 1 second off to the #3 team, we have becoming supporters of the new Williams.

Williams has no future in Formula 1, and if we keep going down this track, McLaren won’t have any future in this sport either. I was happy with reaching Q3 2 years ago. Now I want to see progress. We should be 4th team at this stage. With our eyes on Red Bull. Not be behind Haas.

Just got home from the track. I sat between turns 15&16.

My quick observations. The power delivery out of 15 is lacking compared to most other teams . I could hear Lando especially holding the throttle a little longer than most other drivers when exiting 15 into 16.
The braking was really great I saw no lock ups by Lando or Carlos today into 15 where as most other drivers had at least 1.

The car and livery look beautiful in real life!

And a great performance from Lando! Shame about Carlos, but to be only 1.1ish seconds off the Ferrari today was sensational! Can't wait for the race tomorrow!

The crying was for Norris, last time I saw a McLaren young driver do that...you know who and when...

Great job today for McLaren. They beat the Renault works team that has very highly rated drivers with a rookie. Given the turmoil they had as a team I'd say thats great progress.

Have in mind that Mercedes's success has Mclaren written all over it.After all they took half of our personel when they left along with most of our aerodynamic team and Hamilton. Then they bought Brawn GP who used to be Bar Honda who was already a good team.

The bottom line is that even my grandma can succeed when it's success is set up witj resources of others. Lame and boring. Its much more honest tp build up your own team and succeed.

Also have in mind that F1 is nothing without Mclaren,Ferrari or Williams. They have the majority of supporters and it's no wonder the best F1 years were the times that those teams shined. Nobody would care if Mercedes or Red Bull leave.

Oh I see what you mean. This definitely is a future star. Can’t wait to see him compete against the top drivers. I’d want to see him go against Lewis and Max.

Underrated achievement. They beat both Renaults with very highly regarded drivers and after all the fuss about their pace in pre-season. Maybe they'll beat the Haas cars as well, given on race-pace the engines are a bit more equal.

I have to admit i was feeling dissapointed when Lando did his first lap time in Q1 and i thought to myself - "here we go again", but when he did a lap just 0,7sec shy of the leader, i have become estatic. Sure Sainz has fallen out, but just by a fraction and even due to the Kubica and his problems.

Then came Q2 and i have seen the first lap of Lando, i believe he was more or less last and i thought - "oh well, 15th - i will have to live with it), then he smacks me with 9th time and gets trough to Q3.

In Q3, i really didnt expect much more, Lando jet again did the slowest time and i thought "10th is more than good enough, i must not be too greedy", and BAM! he gets to 8th.

Thank you Lando, and please feel free to smack me every weekend this season, i have plenty of space left on my cheeks :) I really hope both of them score points tomorrow.

Norris is really really talented and his reputation of being the king of qualifying has been confirmed. Its like he firstly explores the track and takes the feel of it and then he delivers with the last lap, outperforming others.

Realistically no other team was anywhere near closer than .7 from Ham. Evan RBR is almost 1 second of the pace.

I am astonished that you have expected them to fight the top 3. The first thing that we should expect are consistency of points at every race, then to be the best of the rest and maybe after that starting to nibble at the top.

But as long as all 3 top teams have their B teams, no privateer will be able to match them. Maybe with a budget of 600 - 800 million eur, but otherwise no way. On the other hand, their collaboration with Renault may get them the resources needed to bounce back.
