Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The car is so stiff on the road it looks almost dangerous to drive, particularly on the straights.

Every time they showed Lewis on the main straight with the DRS open, the car car was literally dancing side to side it's so non compliant with the bumps on the track.

Martin Brundle also noted that it seems like the car is so unruly that Lewis was actually having to "drive the car on the straights".

It makes me wonder what overtaking will be like when opening the DRS seems to make the car so unbalanced.

Good read, thanks for posting.

Cheers, I thought the most interesting bit was the explanation of the design trade-offs in the bargeboard area. So you can directly generate downforce with the bargeboards but if you do that you compromise their ability to feed the diffuser. I had never read about this anywhere before.

An Instagram story by MercedesAMG media guy Paul Ripke has an interesting BTS thing with the tyres and a view of the rims:

Does that part could affect so much HAM pace in the race
Of course I struggle. I just don’t quit.

Interesting. On the jet engine, those serrated exits are for noise reduction. I can't see a need for that on a DRS actuator, so are Mercedes just playing with the other manufactures...

Is the piece that has gone missing a separate component that has fallen off or a part of the floor that has broken?

I think I recall seeing that some teams adjust the trailing edge of the floor to get it as close to the tyre as possible.

My guess is, he did not lose as much pace. Nobody more than him understands the track position on this circuit and once he fluffed the start, he knew the chance of a victory was gone. With damage to the floor, he then conserved the tyres to have a go for the fastest lap in the end, but Valtteri's race strategy was just too good for that. Half a second difference on their fastest laps on 57th lap shows the difference in tyre life and with a damage on the floor.
