Is it for cooling? or dual purpose and create a boundary layer, perhaps to attach to the rear wing to make it more effective?

It's for cooling, as it has always been in Bahrain. If it did any good for downforce they'd use it all the time.

Didn't Mercedes have this previous race? Vents in previous years look like grates with slats or multiple gills more on the side pontoons. Did RB14 have this single gill last year? If this acted like a duct then it would in my mind be a way to smooth the air coming around the halo.

Is an opening like that, in that location, very detrimental aero wise or not too large of a deal? I know it's not optimum, but if it's a substantial detriment it says to me possibly the cooling is a larger concern than I thought.

Oh yes ofc. ... rb didn't test it, rb didn't tried it on the simulator....they just brought it along at thought by themselfs "what the heck let's put it on, because we have already told everyone we have no cooling issue and now we let them guess we have one in a desert race"

So does that mean they will close it during fp2 and qualifying since its not as hot? I question its only purpose as being for cooling because the design doesn't allow for it to be closed at will.

Just saw that they are closed in FP2, so when they do need it this is the new design compared to previous slats.

Didn't notice that in Australia, Gasly and Verstappen ran slightly different FW specs in the Y250 zone on the RB15. Team did comparisons in FP1 in Bahrain

Yep it’s legal. Taking a cross-sectional slice in that region would show that the wing still only has 5 elements.

it looks like they did this in a last minute job... if you look closely you see that the edges where the changes are on Verstappen wings are more edgy
so the wings were the same but at Verstappen they have cut off and out a piece of that wing

Do they run the intercooler in the back of the tub like Mercedes? If so, it could help with that. Alternatively, it could be pulling air from around the battery. Maybe one of the nose air inlets is cooling the battery rather than acting as an S-duct. If so, this vent, behind the halo, will be in a good place to pull air through the system.
