Just read the articles on AMUS and yes it does say the ferrari engine was too cold in AUS. Interesting indead....

Yeah... For what i understood, the temperatures in Australia were lower than what they were expecting. So they used too much cooling (maybe the open part of the bodywork at the rear). That caused the turbo not working at the right temperature. And caused some problems with misfires... than they had to reduce the power, wich lead to high consumption.

I'm genuinely surprised by that news and very skeptical of it. Thermostats in the cooling circuits should prevent this by partially closing cooling circuits in the event of under temperature.

Hmmmm this doesn't really make sense :roll:

Most thermostats can almost completely close a cooling circuit only allowing a minimum of cooling flow through only to prevent shock cooling should the thermostat open rapidly. If this is the case then I would be very surprised if the Ferrari engineers got their sums that wrong.

I guess the alternative is that they aren't running thermostats in some cooling circuits. The only 2 reasons that I can think of that are for:
1. Weight
2. Reduction of potential points of failure (this would be ironic as overcooling can be a point of failure and hurt them in the race).

It looked like in FP2 Ferrari was running the narrow engine cover of Barcelona again.

AFAIK these engines do not use thermostats in the cooling circuit

No, they just control the pump flow instead.

The only overcooling they could have would be intercoolers but no way are you getting those out that far...

Just some duct tape over the radiator inlet will solve the problem if there was one in the first place...
In fact, this was often done during winter testing before.

I think there were pictures here showing the narrow engine cover on the car even before FP1.

Another point:
3. Efficiency of the cooling pump.

That's why i assume that they run electrical pumps and just change cooling flow. By far more efficient then letting the pump push the water against the closed thermostat.
