If the Automotive arm keeps growing at the rate it has been over the past few years then I think a McLaren-built engine becomes a more realistic proposition (depending on the 2021 rules though I guess).

They have knowledge of how Honda & Renault (two of the worlds largest manufacturing powerhouses) have built their units and already have experience in the turbo-hybrid field with the engine they built for the P1 and the Senna.

If it were to happen it would be a huge risk both financially and reputationally so I’d imagine they’d maybe do it alongside or, at the very least, bring in a few top guys from Cosworth or Ilmor or something to lead the project.

The greatest hurdle is the current set of regulations. Costs are too high to develop a new PU. This MGU-H is complicated and is probably the part that costs a lot in terms of price, performance and reliability.

Take that unit, its control electronics and cooling systems out, and you will have just Engine, Battery, KERS (MGUK), their control electronics and ancillaries. McLaren already has the KERS know-how, having supplied batteries, Motors and Control Units to Formula E; which means it's already a rigorously tested and constantly improved design. All they need is a bulletproof engine to complement the PU design.

So, for McLaren to develop their own PU, the MGUH needs to go and budget cap has to be put in place. That's not possible unless the 2021 regulations are fixed.

Definitely, the engine rules as they are would be too much for McLaren to handle, cost/investment wise. It says a lot when new manufacturers are put off by what it would entail.

New "autosport" analysis suggests Hass and Renalut are MEANT to be fighting for 4th. They are hilarious. McLaren not even mentioned. It's interesting how team can be Meant for something... probably because they made hilarious predictions, now everything is meant to be as they predicted, although it's far from it lol

To be fair Mclaren are expecting to have trouble fighting HASS and FI here because neither of them should struggle with the tyres here in Barca - the team's been able to get on top of the tyre sims for the new Pirelli's very quickly and the '34 is responding well to setup changes to suit, which has helped them out a lot with race pace.
But yes, Renault hasn't really even show a flash of being much faster than Mclaren, so....

You need to account also the fact that McLaren was not very "lucky" in first three races. If things went even slightly better they could have been even few more points safer in 4th.

That's gonna be worth a few tenths.. :P Seriously though, I'm excited he's finally on board. Zak has done admirably well.

Yeah, the MGU-H isn't gonna go. It's to late for new PU regs for 2021 already. You need to give a 4-5 year lead.

McLaren would need the same amount of time if they would want to build their own PUs.

I actually think if they had a good enough Chassis, they could win with the Renault PU. I think the combination in the change in fuel regs this year and Renault PU power improvements have made that possible. They just need to improve their reliability.

Even if I’d did happen - which it would t, I disagree... Name 1 team that would want a Renault engine?

The only ones I can come up with are Williams & Racing Point

RP won’t as they do t need the money but they do need Mercedes Power to fight for midfield lead

Williams won’t, as it would cost more money and more importantly time, than they can spare to re-design the car, plus they’re already at the back, again the loss of power would be unacceptable
Unacceptable? Keep last postion as currently but with reduced costs? I can´t disagree more

Any team not fighting for the title or to lead the midfield will accept a Renault PU is price is low enough. And if Renault is fighting for the title and want to stop supplying McLaren, will sell the PU for almost nothing. It would be a minimal investment compared to the investment done in all these years to develop the power unit, the car and the team to reach that position of title contenders.

They could even give it for free, it´s nothing compared to the investment they´re doing now

 you don’t halve argue the toss for no good reason. Sure it would save cost on the face of it. But try and explain to current or future sponsors why you’re trading down to an inferior engine. You might safe costs but in the long run actually it might do more harm than good.

Now let’s see how Sui-Seidle does for the team!

Because the two or three tenths between engines is nothing compared to the 7-10 tenths you can get spending the XX million you saved on the chassis and aero. It's a very easy sell when you realise your not saving money but merely moving it.

Yeah the Renault engine isn't perfect, but it certainly ain't bad. It's not like they are losing one second a lap. Red Bull was winning races with the Renault last year and this new spec is clearly a big step up, so stop whining about it. The engines will equal out over the next period and McLaren has way more to win on the chassis side. McLaren won't do their own engine, because the rules won't change. Even if they made the rules simplier I highly doubt McLaren would consider it, because you still need a big amount of money. Their roadcars don't use McLaren engines.

They're reworked Nissan engines which means Renault has a hand in their road car engines.
