I read somewhere, I think it was Joe Saward's blog, where he speculated that if things continue to go downhill at Williams, the engine could go to McLaren. He said it's not a very good look for the brand to have their engine propping up the field. I feel he was just giving his opinion for what could logically happen, but you never know.
Would be interesting to see, do mclaren have a Renault contract until 2020?
Yes they do, I believe he was talking about 2021.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

The update for Spain is only aimed at reliability, which removes the limitations they had in Baku.

I dont' know if you've seen the numbers, but their automative business is doing great.

But nowhere near being good enough to be an engine supplier. It bodes well for the future but that revenue is still small fry when it comes to funding f1 car and engine development.

Ferraris budget in 2016 was half a billion. Nearly half the Mac groups revenue.
These things takes time and I’m sure they aren’t interested building their own F1 engine with the current rules. Mclaren simply needs new rules to limit spending.
Not under the current rules, no. They won't have the finances before the next rules either, and like Honda shouldn't have, they won't want to enter the new engine regulations part way through when others have already been running theirs. So look for the set of regs after that and you'll be looking at least a decade away, if it is even something they want to do.

It's possible they might buy Ricardo but how much might be that cost? A billion or so? That's just to get the project off the ground and not including investment.

It's a huge chunk of cash that Mclaren don't and won't have for a while.

Exactly, imagine the gigantic lead time and you aren't even sure if they will create something better (highly unlikely actually). The development on the engine side is already shrinking, so the manufacturers will get closer to each other each year. Red Bull has won several races with the Renault and it seems this years specs is quite a big improvement pace wise. I don't feel like the engine is McLaren's biggest problem, the 'lack' of budget compared to Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull is. According to Brown they are getting outspend 5 to 3.

Yes, that was my implication as well. If they did start their own engine dept it would take at least 2-3 years to finish the factory & hiring and maybe another 5 years to get up to speed. So of course it's a long-term project but given the Mclaren Group's expansion I sort of see it as inevitable.
Makes no business sense.
Automotive has great financial results even tho F1 Team was mediocre last 4-5 years.
Why bother to dumb on the wind north of 1mlrd cash?
Selling F1 team makes more sense actually.

Seidl:

“I’m delighted to have now started at McLaren and I’ve had a really warm welcome from everyone in the team. During my first few days I’ve been speaking to as many people around the factory as possible and this will continue over coming weeks as I get to know the team.

“In Spain we’ll look to build on the performance shown in the first few races, however we know the field is extremely tightly-packed. The start of the European season is traditionally where teaams bring upgrades, so it’s hard to say where the grid will line up this weekend, but we will continue to focus on developing our package and improve the car in key areas.

"As always, the objective during the weekend will be on ensuring strategy, operations and reliability are as strong as they can

It's in line with the group's historic direction of exclusivity. If they have more money from sponsors and need to spend less under the budget caps, better win as Mclaren than Mclaren Renault. That's given they do have a big chunk of money by the time and Renault partnership turns sour which is a gambled prediction at the moment.

Yeah, because they already won so much races as McLaren-McLaren. Tell me one good reason why they should spend this amount of money on their own engine. There is no guarantee that it will bring improved performance and do you actually think McLaren wants to run around at the back because of their engine failing? Look at all the sponsors that left, look at all the comments, they're finally on their way up again after 4 or 5 years. Their own engine makes no sense at all. If McLaren wants to go to the top they should try to increase their budget. I think people are complaining a bit too much about the Renault, seems fine to be. Can it be better? Sure. Is it stopping McLaren from winning? Hell no.

But back then they had works deals with Mercedes & Honda. I'm just saying it's a possibility IF the Renault partnership doesn't workout and IF they have plenty of money. You're more likely to win in F1 if you have autonomy over every aspect of the car which includes the engine.

Even if the Renault partnership doesn't work, there's no chance they'll do their engines, it's economic and professional suicide. Let's not forget how long it's taken Renault and Honda to get this close, now imagine how much they've spent. McLaren don't generate that kind of revenue to cover the costs, it's like a mom and dad business compared to the manufacturers. BMW left and never looked back, VW/Audi, nothing doing, even a fierce German rivalry isn't enough to "trick" them into coming in. Porsche, Aston Martin were like window shoppers who walk into an expensive shop knowing that they can't afford anything there, but won't get thrown out.
The only thing we can hope for is if Mercedes get tired of winning and pull out of running the race team and return to 1995-2009 status with McLaren. (unlikely)

Sainz in an event from “Estrella Galicia” in Spain:

“... 7th and 8th will be a dream position for both Qualifying and the Race, during testing we calculated that Haas was 3 or 4 tenth faster than us, which is hard to cover and they have always had good performance in this track... Racing Point has also improved and we expect Renault to be there in the mix also...”

To the end of 2020 yes. I wouldn't hold my breath. Being Last is not a good enough reason to have PUs taken away. Like to see them explain that to the FIA. Plus Wolf and his wife both have a Connection to Williams.

Mercedes was happy to supply Manor when they were last, it’s more likely that Mercedes increase their tie-up with Williams to provide a platform for junior drivers.

Plus, the Renault engine may not be the best but Red Bull won races with it last year, if McLaren can built a good enough chassis they can be on the podium at least.
