Australia 0

Actually worse than last year but...
At least we are 4th in the championship. Still to be seen if this car is actually a stable platform/concept to build on, but I doubt the performance drop off like last year will happen (hopefully).

The top 3 are untouchable.
Last year’s points is because of Alonso.

Noooo... :o :o Last year we were extremely lucky in 1st four races... Haas & STR made horrible mistakes and had some reliability problems...

Under yellow you'll still can be at least 15 seconds faster than pitting.

So the way it went was:
  • Yellow came out .
  • Cars pitted, sainz didn't. This resulted in Sainz unlapping himself as Hamilton pitted
  • Safety car came out behind sainz and slowed to crawl to picking everyone up.
  • Sainz went around on yellow and caught up to the back of the leaders.
  • Sainz and STR pitted. STR were not ready for pit stop, Both STRs had a REALLY slow pit stop.
  • Sainz/STRs caught up behind the leaders
  • lapped cars who are behind the safety car were released
Thank you for the explanation. I couldn't wrap my head around it, how did he end up that much better than the rest. Your explanation makes complete sense. I think this was a lucky turn of events and not tactics on their part, but to be honest, it should be in the "rulebook" for future races.

This is not the end of the world for us... Look at Alfa... They were at our pace - if not a bit quicker - at start of season...

Hopefully we can solve a lot of the problems in the coming test... [-o< [-o<

Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Andreas Seidl, Team Principal:

“Overall, in terms of performance, it was encouraging to see that we definitely got closer to the top cars in the midfield when we compare our pace this weekend with the pace we had on a track with similar characteristics like China. So, thanks also for the great work at the factory to bring the aero updates here.”

Seems the team are more positive than the fans here....

And who knows, McLaren has already switched to Petrobras fuel?

They said last year that they will this year. So probably.

Gap to pole in China was 2 sec. Here it was 1.9 sec. The Shanghai straights probably helped mask a bigger corners deficit. But still...

Saw this on the autosport forum, originally from the McLaren website.

The bigger picture
Many messages between the race engineers and drivers during the race were along the lines of: “you’re doing well, pace is good.” The drivers don’t need mollycoddling, but sometimes that message is strategically significant. Both drivers, particularly Carlos, believed they were struggling with a car lacking pace and rear grip. The engineers, able to see the bigger picture, could tell them everybody seemed to be having the same problems and it was the track conditions, rather than their car or tyres.

As part of the agreement, Petrobras, through its CENPES Research Centre, will develop gasoline and engine lubricants specially formulated for the team, which will be used in races in the 2019 season. The company will have a laboratory in the McLaren team’s garage during practice sessions and races, allowing real-time analysis of fuel performance.

The Saftey Car just created an opportunity. McLaren took advantage of 2 errors:
  • a 33+ second pitstop by both STRs.
  • HASS/Grossjean/Magnussen stupidity.

I even have to see if it will ever happen. Petrobras also sponsored Williams some years ago and they never used their lubricants. This is also probably the better way to go, using the same stuff as the engine supplier.
