Sky crew also forgetting that one gearbox has to complete 6 races, this one is the 7th.

Mercedes confirmed this is a Friday gearbox, they use one for Friday and another for Saturday, they're swapping the Friday gearbox now.

FP2: Leclerc fastest as Hamilton hits wall

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel have turned the tables by going fastest in second practice, edging out everybody else after Mercedes put in a dominant display in the morning's practice session.

I wonder if the higher temperatures are playing into Ferrari’s hands?

Bottas did a 1.16.2 on his 18th lap race simulation and Leclerc did a 1.16.5 on his 2nd lap on soft tyres!
Apart from that, on the hard tyres, he was between 7 tenths and 1,2 sec/lap faster over Leclerc on medium.
On the meantime, Vettel was 2.2 to 3 sec/lap slower on soft ones.

And that sums up all the situation here!

And finally, Chandhok said after the FP2 on Sky that Lewis`s gearbox is just fine and indeed was the race one.

The Honda powered cars are nowhere. Gasly doing his best to lose his seat, slower than Renaults and just above Toro Rosso, not to mention the Verstappen incident which reminded of his incident with Hartley. He is going to be the next Hartley at this rate.

Remember in Spain FP1 when Ferrari took a new engine and were only 1/10th behind Merc, but no where by qualifying?

When you take a new engine you need to run it at a higher engine mode in FP1 to simply run some real checks on it. If you only find out in FP3 that in higher engine modes it's going to fail then you may not get the old engine in by qualifying.

So Ferrari in Spain looked fast because they ran higher engine mode and as they all ran normally later on they were way down. Here Merc likely ran higher engine mode in FP1 with a new engine, got the data they needed and some combination of them turning the engine down a little and Ferrari turning theirs up a little.

Ferrari did make up plenty of time in the straights in Barcelona but lost bundles of time in corners and got spanked in S3 so here with massive straights and less corners it was pretty likely that Ferrari were going to be pretty decent. Merc engine update is very minor so it isn't crazy to think Canada (and maybe many power tracks) would be closer to Bahrain performance for Ferrari.

You know something. I’m staring to agree with Karun Chandhok (as well as others). Make teams HAVE to run all 3 tyre types in a race.

Have to say the Mclarens seems to be on the sweet spot. Lowest degs of all, rear limited tracks seem to suit them this year. Miles ahead of midfield, race pace is better than Ferrari dare i say.

Ferrari is always going to do well on a power track with high speeds in a straight line.

The medium and high speed corners where Mercedes gets all the time back don't exist in Montreal--there isn't a real corner on the entire lap.

So maybe Ferrari can reach the stop step for a change.

Also: when the Ferrari is doing well and not a handful to drive, LeClerc seems to get the better of Vettel.

Vettel seems to do better when the car is not optimized.
