This is not true that sales in China were bad. I checked their income statement, balance sheet, etc. and actually the revenues were higher both in Europe, Asia and America.
They made more capex this quarter as well as the R&D has increased.
And also the issues which astracrazzy mentioned.
The first half of the year was profitable even with this 2nd quarter and actually Daimler itself just gives a small portion of money to the F1 team (80-80 to both team and engine R&D).

Or, the foundation of the car was set in the past and built upon over time. And when you peel back the layers you will see that heritage in the car today.

Whatever the motivation or back story, the execution is...strange. The silver livery looks good, the white stuff and small "stripped" sections look ok, I really like the vintage touches and font for Mercedes, but as applied it all looks ugly. Would've been so much nicer to have the full car in white with just some silver patches here and there. Maybe sponsorship/branding requirements prevented them doing it.
