I don’t think we are catching them yet... As a matter of fact, we haven’t cleared the midfield yet.

Yes, our race execution is potentially better... We were lucky today (Hulk’s and Ric’s retirements)... But the pace is still with the midfield.

There is a big gap to the top 3 and for the team to close to them, first they need to be at least a few tenths faster the rest of the field to say that we are getting closer.

Now, focus on Hungary, which could be a very hard race for the team due to it’s layout and a race where track position is very important... If the Qualy pace isn’t there, could be a very hard weekend for the team.

You have to be realistic. Ok, last year the car had a fundamental problem and updates were practically stopped at the middle of the season, so this year the car is significantly better, but the gap to top three is still gigantic, and without a massive cash injection of a new title sponsor or another works engine partner they wont be able to close the gap. They should play it safe and go for being 4th overall, and do that until someone comes by and offers them good money deal.
It’s not really a “money” problem... It’s just a development/concept issue... They are working on it, they are getting better with it... But they can and should make progress with the budget they have.

Allow me to disagree friend because Ferrari has the biggest budget in Formula 1 due to that they gain extra money but they lose badly. It's not about budget only. I believe we are on the right track.
True, but they are also an engine manufacturer and rarely bellow 3rd in the championship. Mclaren on the other hand hit rock bottom in 2015 and again in 2017, last year it looked decent at the start nad they fell down yet again as the season progressed. This year, they are making a great step up, but the points tally is still microscopic to the one of each top 3 teams.

I am diehard fan of Mclaren, but i dont want to overhype their performance ever again, like i did in the previous 4 seasons. I am rather taking an extra caution now and just enjoy every little succes they manage to achieve. But they are still far from a Mclaren that had a bad day when its driver finished the race in 4th or 5th position.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

True, but Ferrari are loosing to equally well financed teams like Mercedes. Mercedes can match Ferrari dollar for dollar, euro for euro, if the need arises. But that said, you don’t have to be the highest spender, but you have to be among them. The top 3 in F1 are the top 3 spenders, irrespective of the order.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Undeniable that the team is a far cry away from it’s glory days, but they are trying to get back to the top... Their issue today isn’t cash, the issue was structure and focus and those have been addressed with the hires they’ve made lately.

I’m not saying that they can win the championship with their current budget, but it’s clear they could be doing way more with the budget they currently.

For the team to be in the position they are today, considering previous years is encouraging... The focus should be in small incremental improvements during the season (with bigger leaps during Winter) and so far they are doing just that.

Spectacular race, great for F1.
Putting new Inters on SAI on lap 29 despite what everybody else was doing best decision ever. It takes balls to make that call when everybody else is going for dry tires at that time.
Kudos to the Team for that game changing decision.

Just compare the McLaren Halo to the Merc Halo, just because it's a very visible part. You can see how much more money Merc is spending by how much that one part is more refined/integrated into the car.

What a race, we are lucky SAI managed to get out of the death trap at the last corner and considering all 5th place is superb. Bad luck for LAN as his car did not held up but still a good weekend. Now we need to brace ourselfs for the hardest race yet this season for us (on paper)

Great job by Sainz after his spin. I also beleive their best finish in this season and a long time. Nice touch by Sainz to congratulate Torro Rosso, his former team after the race

Um...are you referring to the cooling vents on the Halo? Because they aren't there for the same reason the sidepod vents aren't, because it disturbs the airflow to the diffuser. After last year's struggle they probably wanted to play it safe in terms of airflow streamline and opted to open the engine cover more instead. This isn't a budget but a philosophy issue; Williams even had them last year.

Not disagreeing that the Top 3 have more refined cars and in a big part is due to their budgets, but we can’t forget also that Mclaren’s budget is bigger than the likes of Haas, Racing Point, Alfa and Toro Rosso, who do a great job with an smaller budget... For the resources that McLaren has, they are underperforming... This is something that is acknowledged by the team.

This is not a dig on the team though, but their current performance isn’t entirely related to their budget

True, although we shouldn't forget where they came from.

Haven't we gained some tenths compared to the start of the season compared to the first 3? That to me is still success. You don't need that much huge amount of money to do a good job and Mclaren has the money and the Paragon to support a car that can reach the first 3. If you got a good team behind it
The budget of Mclaren is atleast 100mil lower (maybe even closer to 200 if i remember correctly) of the top 3 teams, so beating them would be a crown achievement and a miracle. I stand by my words, they need to be 4th two years in a row to show stability, then get a wealthy title sponsor and start closing in for the kill.
According to Brown they are getting outspend 5:3.

They also don't make the suspensions, packaging and transmission...
