Spectacular race, great for F1.
Putting new Inters on SAI on lap 29 despite what everybody else was doing best decision ever. It takes balls to make that call when everybody else is going for dry tires at that time.
Kudos to the Team for that game changing decision.
16:04 - SAI to PIT - "We need to stop, this tyre is destroyed. For me, at the moment it's Inter – but tell me what the weather is doing."
16:04 - PIT to SAI - "Both tyres have similar lap-times."
16:05 - Carlos boxed. He's trying a different approach to everyone else and fitting a new set of Inters. Good stop.

I'm guessing he may be reason why they went with the inters.

Btw one minute after that pitstop, Leclerc was in the gravel and safety car deployed.

I just watched Sainz post race with Chandhook (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVFY5yegGwE) and I realized that Sainz put on used softs at the end, he had no new ones. Probably was the difference that made it impossible to catch Stroll and Kvyat.

Times are different nowadays, the regulations have been tightened to such a degree that even genius engineering teams can no longer find ‘silver bullets’ like they could until fairly recently.

It’s no coincidence that there are only three teams that have won a race in the turbo-hybrid era - the three teams who spend almost double the rest of the field. McLaren (and Renault) could feasibly get to that level with a number of large sponsors coming on board but as has been said in here previously this would require a number of years of decent performance; no company with that sort of money to invest wants to see their name languishing at the back of the field.
I still think Coke just might come onboard as lead sponsor next year. The whole deal for 2019 reeks of an intermediate testing phase really, no point for such a huge conglomerate to come in as an insignificant sponsor.
I’m more inclined to see that possibility with BAT, they have limited exposure, due to their products. Coca Cola on the other hand have global appeal and lots of other outlets with which they advertise, big global events and so on. BAT could be to McLaren what PMI is to Ferrari. I read somewhere (which I can’t verify how reliable) that PMI’s sponsorship of Ferrari is worth $160M. If this is true, imagine if McLaren starts improving and is able to negotiate something, not as high, but in that kind of class. The team will definitely be “A Better Tomorrow” 8)
That said, Coca Cola could still upgrade to Santander levels, that would be good too.
BAT is the lead sponsor already with good presence on the car, unlike Coke whose negotiations began with testing water in the first place. They almost didn’t sign the deal for this year. I reckon Zak probably convinced them to have limited presence in 2019 with a performance clause for 2020. It just makes more sense given the precarious nature of the agreement.

True, I just felt BAT would be more likely to expand, even more than they are presently, lock down the side pods full time etc. We see some figures thrown around, I read BAT was worth “in excess of $30M”. I’m sure they can do better.

Any word on what actually caused Lando’s retirement?

Anyone else wondered what the hell Carlos Sainz’s dad was doing walking to the pit wall and talk to Seidl?
True GOATs don’t need the help of superior material to win.

Tom Brady, Usain Bolt are true GOATs.

Hydraulics system failure. Which led to power loss and then gearbox sync loss. Renault.

Are Mclaren making their own gearbox, or Renault provides them together with PUs?

The hydraulic system is not just for the gearbox, it runs the whole power unit and ancillaries and controls gearbox synchronisation.

The link? Lando said it live during the race. Luckily it made it in the GP highlights (vid below). About 2 mins in. Lando specifically says "I lost power and now gear sync".

Yep. But they do make their own transmission, which was the question.

Just realized Stroll spun at the same corner where Norris stopped.

P5 not bad, but also a missed opportunity. This was one of those races where the midfield was in for a podium. Having all of the top three teams F-Up in one way or another only come every few years. Last time was Baku 2018 and 2017 and Williams was on the podium in 2017 and Force India in 2018, now Mclaren was behind STR and RP.
