P5 not bad, but also a missed opportunity. This was one of those races where the midfield was in for a podium. Having all of the top three teams F-Up in one way or another only come every few years. Last time was Baku 2018 and 2017 and Williams was on the podium in 2017 and Force India in 2018, now Mclaren was behind STR and RP.
SAI was closing on Stroll, I really thought that podium was doable.
But at the end VET pass them both and SAI was not in a position to overtake STR and KVY

True, but getting closer though Baku ‘17 finished 9th, ‘18 finished 7th... Now 5th, next crazy race, 3rd?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?

Sainz said it clear, they managed the risk as best as they could... Kvyat finished in the podium because he had nothing to lose and took a big gamble going for Softs before anyone else and it paid off... Sainz on the other hand, was already on a good track position and probably not worth risking... If Lando would have still being in the race, they could have gamble with one of them... But 5th isn’t bad and the points help exceed 2018 total tally... A very good weekend overall.

Personally, I don't mind missing on a podium that doesn't reflect the car's true pace. I know it would be nice(awesome actually) to see a McLaren back on the podium after such a long time. But I think that podium would feel tons better if it is actually earned by the team because of the true pace of the car, and not "as a gift" from a chaotic race.

The race in Germany was very well executed by the team. They took as much risks as they could, without loosing out too much. And in the end it payed off, because the team has extended the advantage to its nearest rival in the standings.

They'll have a tough time this weekend in Hungary, lots of corners where the McLaren is slow. Unless of course they're willing to pack on as much downforce as they can.

I was hoping for some upgrades, I think it was mentioned in AMuS. Though the scope wasn’t mentioned.

On paper it should be a very tough weekend for the team... But they have surprised us before in some races where the result wasn’t expected... Let’s wait and see

I think we can be again in points in Hungary as we did in Monaco.
To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone. ― Bruce McLaren

Actually Sainz got both of them in like 1 second. If there were some more laps he would have a chance.

Just took too long to get the tyre temperatures up after restarts, otherwise it could have been.

You are right that such races are rare, but we need to keep in mind that Stroll and Kvyat ended up P3 and P4 due to a massive gamble that paid off. Stroll pitted from P14 under a safety car. P5 is a pretty good result when we remember that Sainz almost hit the wall and was P14 after that spin.

Problem was that Sainz didn't have any new softs for the last stint, while both Stroll and Kvyat had one. Sainz said after the race that his soft tires were used for 2 timed runs in qualy, that obviously takes a lot of life out of softs. I think that was a losing game from the start. Mediums maybe (he had a new set), but would probably be hard to switch on after safety cars.

When the plan for the season was formulated, the German Grand Prix was circled for a significant update package. That didn’t happen – because staff at the MTC worked around the clock to get the update onto the cars at Silverstone. That meant a different – though no less busy – programme during the practice sessions on Friday with more long-term learning than would usually be the case, new procedures ironed out and development parts evaluated for use in the second half of the season.

One of the reasons why the team is so consistently competitive this year than other mid-fielders; they keep trying to understand the car better every race without only relying on new parts for higher peak performance.

I know what you mean..that being said, they did increase their lead over 5yh from 21 to 28 points.

Toro Rosso isn't really a consistent challenger for P4 anyway so it's actually a 31 point gap (to Renault). But that can be wiped out in one or two races; still a long way to go.

This. Pans out well for next year too.
