Seidl confirmed that in both cases, the problems were only associated with SU. Renault owe us a race.

The cause of the gatherings in both cases, according to Seidl, were Renault engines.

“One of the pilots did not manage to start at all. However, this is a problem with Renault engines, not our flaw.

They are really trying very hard to increase the power of the engines throughout the season and we are happy about it. But putting a new motor, getting a fine for it and eventually getting off due to its breakdown is a shame. However, we have an open relationship and we can work together to find a reason, ”said the head of the McLaren team.

Seidl also recalled that Sainz had an updated engine, while Norris had an old one, but with a significant residual resource: “We don’t know what it is yet, but apparently the reason is not in the versions of the engines.”
If Renault want to improve their PU, then they obviously have to let McLaren see their design along with the changes in management that I mentioned. 2021 could look bright for McLaren and Renault if they work together closely. After digesting the problems in Spa, the options for Mercedes in 2021 or continued relations with Renault both seem plausible.
Aaaaaarg!! Slippery slope to the intentionally dysfunctional and sh!t-throwing culture that existed between Renault and Red Bull.

When you buy the engines, you choose to buy the entire company culture. This includes the company not funding engine development as much as you (the customer) would like. It includes the fact that some reliability risk will be acceptable to the company in their quest to catch up to the front. And frankly, Renault has successfully reduced the power gap to the front.

McLaren have made great progress from 2018 to 2019, but there's still a huge chassis gap to close to the three winning teams. They should focus their scarce time and effort on that.

McLaren are in a good recovery phase now, and I don't want to see that change due to fixation on engine problems they can't control.

I doubt McLaren have anybody that know anything about PUs that would be anywhere close to the quality of people Renault have. Why would they?

Anyways Renault is pushing for an engine freeze by 2021. If that happens all this becomes a moot point.

Surely McLaren have Mechanical Engineers on the team. Furthermore, I read somewhere that Renault is open for us to take a look at the PU in 2020 or 2021. I just don't want our relationship with Renault to be like our relationship with Honda or like their relationship with Red Bull. I would argue that Renault are lacking quality people with the issues with their car and PU. What do you mean by engine freeze? :?: :?:

I agree, but if we are offering to help like Seidl says, then I see it working out for the better for both teams.

McLaren's budget is reported as being in the low $200m region.

Their driver salaries are also substantially lower than the two of the three teams above them which will make quite a difference.

Mercedes budget is 400m which I think, but I'm not sure, also includes engine development. If that is the case then when you remove engine costs and driver salaries, the gap is big, but not 180m big.

This is based on 2018 reported data, I'd like to think that Mclarens budget will.increase over the next few years. Important to note that McLaren did state that last years budget shortfall was covered by the latifi equity. So a budget increase may not be immediate as the extra income would initially cover that shortfall.

We wont be fighting at the very front for a few years, unless we find some magical solution.
McLaren's public records show they spent 210m GBP in 2017. For 2018 their budget had not decreased and they reported a huge loss.

I thought Sainz reverted to the Spec 2 engine for Spa?

Sounds about right. That loss was subsequently covered by the equity injection which is something that I believe was confirmed by the team. Either publicly or in their accounts.

There was a conversation a while back where some people couldn't understand why Mclarens budget might not increase with higher prize money and sponsorship. This was the reason.

It's a long slog to the front unfortunately, still some hurdles to get over.

Then this quote is inaccurate

"Seidl also recalled that Sainz had an updated engine, while Norris had an old one, but with a significant residual resource: “We don’t know what it is yet, but apparently the reason is not in the versions of the engines.”

On specification 2, there were new elements that took after an unsuccessful qualification.

Will all due respect you are undervaluing the talent/workforce that exists all throughout the McLaren company. Not just under the McLaren name, but the companies/people they could subcontract to undertake such things.

At a lower lever for example when McLaren wanted an engine for their MP4 12C road car they contacted Ricardo who reworked a Nissan engine and arguably made it better.

Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

Renault wants engine to be frozen starting 2021, like they were in V8 era.
So only reliability upgrade.

Renault wants to have an F1 program that is self financed, otherwise they'll quit.
So engine freeze, budget cap are key for them

I didn't mean it as a insult and was speaking specifically with McLaren Racing and all the time it would take to come up to speed. Plus Renault keep going out and getting some of the top Merc/Ferrari PU people.

Christophe Mary, who held a senior role in Ferrari's F1 engine project between 1994 and 2007 and then spent another four years in a similar capacity at Mercedes, will join the staff at Viry from August 1.

He has most recently worked as part of the French Groupe PSA conglomerate, leading the development of the Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE concept car before taking on the role of the Chief Systems and Powertrain Engineer in the manufacturer's motorsport arm.

Mary will be appointed as the Director of Engineering and will report to Renault's engine chief Remi Taffin.

AMuS:

Lando Norris gets his fourth drive unit and starts from the very back. Carlos Sainz will try the engine on Friday, which cost him the race in Spa. It was repairable and Renault wants to see if it can be used later in the season. The engine miseries in Spa brought McLaren after a long time again a zero. "Our reliability is not brilliant, but not as bad as it looked in Spa," Sainz defends his team and engine partner Renault. The Spaniard notes: "Renault has made a huge leap in power over the winter. There is not much left to Mercedes and Ferrari. "

Also Norris takes in the stability Renault in protection: "The greater part of the problems was with us." To his engine damage said the 18-year-old Englishman: "The error is found. The problem has never occurred before and apparently can easily be corrected. Am I confident that it will never happen again? That's what they have to ask the engineers."
