Ferrari drivers right hand action

Post

Does anybody have an explanation for the action the Ferrari drivers are doing with their right hand underneath the steering wheel even several times during a lap? For me became more apparent after having the oportunity to see longer on-car shots.

Thank you,

And the differentials too. that's the main changes during a lap.
Everybody does so.

I believe differential is adjusted at the steering wheel (that entry/mid/exit selectors).

Oh excuse me, i didn't read "underneath the steering wheel".

Yes sorry that's the brake bias.

I had the impression that both such settings are available on the steering wheel, not underneath.

Now digging more, it seems indeed the brake balance is made by a specific lever, having only the brake balance display information on the steering wheel.

Does all the other teams are using the same system?

Nope. At least McLaren stopped development of similar setup because it was one of the key features discussed on the espionage hearings.

According to the regulations there must be a mechanical linkage for controlling the brake balance. So teams can't use buttons or a switch on the steering wheel for that.

BTW, during the Chinese GP, just before Ferraris swapped positions I saw Kimi anxiously making some adjustments with his right and then left hand (thus on both sides) under the steering wheel. It looked kinda desperate. Do they have brake balance controls on both sides or was it something else?

Nope, to cut expenses Max would stipulate standard 'itch-scratcher'!

Regarding the Ferrari brake balance adjustment, there are two levers / adjustors. On the right of the cockpit is a selector switch that selects which axle the brake adjustment is to be performed on and also on the right, but behind the steering wheel is a lever which sets the percenatge brake adjustment.

This is information relevant to the F2007, the F2008 may have the adjustment in different locations
