Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Based on?
Less car that interacts with the air. What's better for low drag than less car?
Yeah, but they're trading a relatively small portion of bodywork with two pretty strong vortices, so it's probably more downforce-centered rather than drag reduction. Although the Ferrari-style bargeboard upgrade might mitigate that a bit.
Looks like a trade off, they seem to be confident in getting more from the bargeboards themselves than the air manipulation towards the top of the diffuser the full side pod deflector provides.

Thanks :) . plus, what about the new suspension? what is it? I'm loving this enormous development war. who'll be faster this weekend? we have no idea!!
My pleasure! I have been searching for more front suspension-related photos. In the meantime, here are a few more general photos:

I love those 5 louvres, presumably they must generate a mother of a vortex down the side

what are they trying to hide, achieve with tyre blankets to scrutineering?
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Nothing, they routinely have the tire blankets on. for example here in Singapore.

How long have Mercedes had an outwash front wing for?

I never noticed before.

I see even Williams are also testing an outwash front wing at Suzuka. It seems like Red Bull and Renault are the only holdout who are not running a substantially outwash front wing.

So, .989 after the qualy sims, looks like the upgrade works! They showed what looked like Valtteri dragging the rear of the plank through 130R, so perhaps the new suspension is a bit special...

I think they have a new "brake tin can pick up point" (had I`m not wrong) for the front and rear upper wishbone but I`m struggling to find a photo in order to demonstrate that ... maybe someone could help me with this one ...

Both cars could be seen doing that through 130r.

They've had this flap arrangement (with a slightly shorter chord length on the uppermost flaps) since Germany. Although it "looks" like an outwash front wing, the outermost edges of the flaps (where they meet the end plate) do not drop down the end plate nearly as dramatically as on the Ferrari.

Mercedes runs much more camber in the outer section too.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

going back to AMuS' rake and rear ride height measurements in March, the W10 had 84+20=104mm of rear clearance at pitlane speed. So if they've reduced that to zero at speed, with rubbing on the ground through 130R, that's what the suspension is doing.

That's a pretty major bargeboard upgrade. Turns out they didn't (totally) shift their resources to next season yet. This isn't a reaction to Ferrari's recent form as it surely took longer than 2.5 weeks (time since Singapore when Ferrari upgraded their car) to make this upgrade ready.
I wouldn't say major. It's a 'meh' update as far as I can see it.
It surely is a major one as a package. They made changes to the sidepod, bargeboard and also front wing. If that's not major, I don't know what is.
