Max did not squeeze Lewis to the left and Lewis braked very deep (was behind Max before that) leaving Max not very much place to avoid that kerb). But you cut that off the movie.
Lewis clearly left enough room at the apex on turn one, because Max was already in the space due to braking earlier then Lewis. Max then had to correct his steering when he felt himself losing traction pulling out of turn one heading for turn two or he deliberately tried to crowd or intimidate Lewis by turning left. This caused him to collide with Lewis which in turn caused Lewis's rear to swing out which Lewis corrected. The second collision was as a direct result of this correction and was unavoidable at that moment.
So it was Max's fault that they both ended up on the grass, Lewis has learnt from the Leclerc incident before and knew he would not be penalized for the collision due to the new "hard racing" allowances and held his ground, and so was prepared for the almost inevitable contact with Max and was fortunate to not be pushed out the race completely.
This was Lewis setting a marker for next season as much as this race, letting Max and everybody else know that he will not be intimidated and will fight on their terms when he has to.
Max will have to learn that "
he who lives by the sword must be prepared to die by the sword
"
