Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Titomic the rapid Titanium 3D manufacturing have announced they delivered a part to a formula one team last week using there kinetic fusion process. This could be related to the DAS dual axis steering, it could be anything really.

The problems in the first week, which led to Mercedes changing engines ahead of the final day of running, were caused by cooling problems with the MGU-H. By the second test, tweaks had been made to help overcome the issue and there was no repeat of that specific problem.

The trouble at the second test was caused by two bearing failures, and Mercedes has applied countermeasures for its spec-one engine that will be used from this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

Despite the testing problems, Mercedes has not had to roll back on the specification of engine it will use, and it is confident that it will not have to limit how aggressive it can be with engine modes in a bid to ensure reliability.

It doesn't say anything about those pesky oil pressure issues

Wouldn't the MGU-H lubrication be with oil? In which case, that's where it was a problem, and apparently solved.

Bearing failures are often oil supply related, so fixing the bearing failure issue is likely to be oil related.

It is quite funny watching a RBR/Honda fan shouting how badly Mercedes are doing before anyone has run a race-spec car in anger.

Indeed, Hamilton's spectacular PU failure in Malaysia 2016, and subsequent loss of the championships was caused by a momentary loss of oil pressure that lead to a main bearing failure.
