Mercedes W11

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks hydraulic Assisted from different points? Quite a big peice of kit.

Wait a minute! i Don't see no steering rack!

I wonder if the whole setup is hydraulic and pushing/pulling the wheel just pushes/pls the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder ends

I think the whole thing is motor driven and hydraulically operated on the push of a button, the steering wheel just moves in and out as a consequence of that part of the steering geometry moving back and forth as a unit (that is what changes the toe out to neutral, a part of the suspension being pulled backwards).

Pretty much expected it to be hydraulic assisted when we first started talking about it given how smoothly it moves - if it uses the same hydraulics as the rack itself and a spool system so it's just 'assisting' the hand inputs it's perfectly legal.

god is that whole huge thing DAS? i was thinking it'd be like a steering rack just fatter! No wonder RBR want it banned cos it doesn't look copyable whatsoever for this year

Like I said before, copying it is easy, fitting into your existing packaging for the year....not so much.

I wonder how much of a weight penalty that would be. I mean, the longer wheelbase would probably mean they have more leverage balancing to the rear, but that's still a fair amount of mass far up front.

This is a perfect example of why Mercedes has been so dominant, They seem to have every possible eventuality covered.

It s also an example of already knowing the solution Is questionably legal , then deemed illegal, but putting It on track Just the same.... Other teams, even top teams, wouldnt spend so much for that extra design and production. But Mercedes can afford it

Ferrari and RedBull can afford it too. They have chosen to spend it elsewhere.

Not an ideal solution, looks more like a temporary fix but I am sure they will have one for the next event.
