Full slick tyres are usually utilized in asphalt legal road racing in many years but public road drivers/riders are dominantly utilizing treaded tyres in all conditions rather than ful slick tyres that usually used in dry conditions only.
they didn't develop a slick rain tire, they made a slick out an intermediate tire so on a long circuit like Le Mans, LMP cars could still do a lap which was mostly dry without overheating because of the threat on intermediate tires.
slick tires warm up very difficult becuase of less movement inside the tire in damp/cold conditions compared to rain tires with the blocks. Wet racing tires overheat very quickly because of the forces on them.
this hybrid tire stayed within temp much more that a normal slick in damp conditions.
On the road, tire temp is much much lower and tires must operate well from subzero up to cooking hot, sometimes in one trip.
in a car not so much, but on a motorbike you really feel the difference between cold and warm tires.
Road all weather tires are very different then racing wet tires. Racing tires are constructed so the movement inside the tire and the blocks will create additional heat, to cope with the rain. Wet racing tires can't be run in the dry.
The difference between road all weather motorbike tires and wet racing tires is night and day. Just have a google around and you'll be amazed how different they are.
you would still aquaplane in a normal rain conditions.
I live where it rains. I tried running a set on my hot rod Triumph motorcycle and tho it was dry when I went out there were wet patches and by the time I got back home I had had a number of scares.
They came off straight away.
