1988, Hockenheim. German GP Free Practice. Williams tested this ultra low wing on the Fw12 Judd, basically made of just the lower flap and half-cut side panels, in attempt to reduce drag due to the nature of the circuit, back then in its original high-speed straights layout.
Also, they combined it with a lowered engine cover, with old-style-1960ish grills as air intakes instead of the classic airscoop...
They never used those solution in quali or race.

Again, they re-vitalized the same ultra low wing concept nine years later on the 1997 Fw19 Renault.
Again, just in free practice.

Patrick Racing Wildcat Mk8B Indycar. Designer was Gordon Kimball, father of current Indycar driver Charlie Kimball.

Additional low-mount rear wing was tried but apparently not raced. Pics only show the extra wing in low-downforce (superspeedway) config.

I remember BAR tested rear wing which had a lot of longitudinal plates or something like that, which was swiftly banned by FIA. Does anybody remember that?

That was to get around wording limiting to 2 sections by joining a 3rd upper flap to the main wing. Much like they do with vanes in the nose to meet the minimum section now.

I don't think it was banned, but rather the agreement was not to use it. BAR was smart(as in, not smart) to use an image with that wing as promo material, which subsequently ended with them not running the wing at the planned event.

I don't know why they stopped using it in motorsports. Probably because at around 1994 they all limited the floor in one way or another? Although it did make a return in 2010(and following seasons) on the Red Bull RB6;
