Carlos didn't mention anything about yellow flags in his interview, but he did say his 2nd Q3 run was on used softs.
EDIT: Used softs run could've been his first one, so you could be right about the yellows.
McLaren usually has a single set of new softs for Q3. They hold it for the last run so the first run is usually half a second or second slower than the last lap. This is not uncommon, all midfield teams do it this way as they can't qualify out of Q1/Q2 on used tires like Mercedes or Red Bull can.martinbeiker wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 17:35Carlos didn't mention anything about yellow flags in his interview, but he did say his 2nd Q3 run was on used softs.

Sainz did not have a 103.601 last year... it was a 113.601 and he was out in q2 because he was starting from the back due to engine change for upgradeGround Effect wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 17:01Sainz had a grid penalty last year though, started at the back.chrisgr wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:38Sainz had a 1.03.601 last year in Austria. I dont remember why he started from behind...101FlyingDutchman wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 16:25What do you mean our time wasn’t better? Last year fastest lap of the MCL34 in quali was a 1.04.099. Now into the 1.03.6. Id say that is a very decent improvement over a short lap
I'm of the same mind, given how tight it was with some flashes of pace from Racing Point and Renault through practice. I assumed like many that Ferrari still had something in the tank, so was expecting a scrap to make it into Q3, never mind 2nd row.Mansell89 wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 19:06I think we still have to be cautious- one thing we know is it is SO tight between so many teams.
What pleases me about today is that we executed things really well following on a trend from last year and crucially we upped our game at the key moments.
I was worried after FP3 but delighted to see us come alive as the wick was turned up.
Very tough fight tomorrow so hopefully we have clean races and get some good finishes in
Really pleasing glimpse of pace today though whatever happens.
The short lap means any stragglers or cars been in for new wings etc will be caught sooner. This could help as Max tyres will be worn by then (if it is in the right place) and far easier for Lando if he has just picked up new rubber.101FlyingDutchman wrote: ↑04 Jul 2020, 22:15Let’s see what tomorrow brings. My gut feeling is that it will be really tough. Ferrari race pace was way better then their quali pace suggests (mainly power related). RP race sim was very quick. Renault was a match. My hope would be is a good clean start and be able to do the first stint following a faster car and getting the tow. Once gaps have developed it’ll be easier to keep people behind
