I suppose that is good. We gained one more point to gain an 1 point lead. On other news. What do you think of Toto Wolf slamming Mclaren and Ferrari because they want to sign the new Concorde Agreement? Why is he bothered by that?
I think Toto was slamming Ferrari, not McLaren, though he didn’t mention names.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

The car was definitely quicker than the race result dished out but a series of unfortunate events caught them out.

Bit of a lax start from Lando dropped him out of the points and he got trapped in his box by a train of upcoming cars restricting his release when they switched to slicks. Both cars then got stuck behind slower cars (namely the Renaults but Leclerc for a while too) for a huge chunk of the race because it’s almost impossible to overtake without something like a 2s pace advantage.

Bit of perspective is needed from some in here. The team have scored 41 points in the first three races, an average of almost 14 per race - if you’d offered the team a 6th & 7th place finish three weeks on the trot after testing I guarantee they’d have happily taken that and I’d wager most of you would have as well.

The team needs to step up its game on the pitstops. We can fight for 3rd in the championship, but if we want to defeat Ferrari, PM and Renault, everything needs to go perfectly. We are so close in terms of pace compared to these 3 teams, that we cannot afford to lose over a second on pitstops. The margin isn’t there.
Also, we don’t know how long this season will go. If we get a second wave and F1 will be suspended again, then we’ll need that 3rd place to survive. We should pretend every race is the final one.
Surely, if F1 were to manage to finish 15 races this season, I wouldn’t worry about the copycats, I am confident we can outdevelop them and Renault and Ferari too. But until then we need to perform at 100%, race after race to secure 3rd, collect that money we need and attract bigger sponsors.

The article mentions about Mclaren.
Toto is obviously upset because he’s now lost negotiating power with liberty. Now Mclaren and Ferrari going public saying they’ll sign the new deal means Liberty can say ‘well Mclaren and Ferrari are happy with the new terms- where your signature Toto?’
It’s all political

Totos response seemed quite petulant. Nobody said anything wrong but he's obviously feeling some pressure. But I found the whole "making themselves a laughing stock" , a little desperate, like he was trying too hard to get people to buy into his spin.

Anyway, we were unfortunate with the race, we were good for a two top ten finishes but the change of tyres gave us a setback. Both Carlos and Lando were held up in the pits.

Yes its all political at this point, and Toto has many interests in few teams present in the paddock

Average pitstop times per driver for the race as a whole
VER - 21.4
RUS - 21.5
BOT - 21.7
RIC - 21.0
HAM - 22.3
GIO - 22.4
LEC - 22.4
STR - 22.6
GRO - 22.6
ALB - 22.6
PER - 22.7
GAS - 22.7
NOR - 22.9
OCO - 23.1
KVY - 23.1
MAG - 23.6
RAI - 24.7
SAI - 24.8
VET - 25.1
LAT - 26.8

Also, looking at the first five laps (so after all the pitstops had shaken out), the biggest losers were...McLaren.

Removing GRO and MAG (as they were on a different strategy entirely), only four drivers lost places over those laps, Sainz, Norris, Vettel and Latifi (who very nearly jumped Sainz, which would've meant only 3 drivers would've lost out).

Could they have pitted a lap earlier? Perhaps, but the crossover point wasn't quite there and the lap after would've been way too late. If you pit when everyone else does, you're in the lap of the gods on whether you'll have a free spot to get out on time. Vettel lost over a second more than Sainz (about 5.4 seconds lost over the average pitstop at that point in the race and 7.1 seconds on the quickest (Russell 21.184))

Just reading the news and have seen a article https://www.motorsportweek.com/2020/07/ ... n-hungary/ that mclaren brought updates to Hungary, but didnt use the ones wich were introduced in spielberg. Does that hint to a correlation problem?

There was nearly nothing new on Hungary. It was just a high downforce package with the opened up rear for better cooling.

They tested a new floor in Styria, but as far as I am aware, it was only tested. It wasn't run in the race that weekend nor in Hungary. Perhaps they were evaluating something before they introduce some planned upgrades next race in Silverstone.

Edit: Also that difusser that the article mentions was introduced in the second week of testing. It's not new at all.

-----------------------------------------------Aero upgrades at Silverstone------------------------------------------------------

"As you know, in Hungary you suffer especially when you fall behind," says team boss Andreas Seidl. "You can't overtake and you break your tires. We unfortunately never had a clear run. I think the pace would not have been that bad otherwise. We could have fought with the Ferraris, the Renaults and at least one racing point. " The result is obviously a disappointment. But in terms of pace, the first three races give us a good feeling for the next tasks," Seidl says optimistically.

Seidl is already announcing the next expansion stage for Silverstone. "We have to make sure that the upgrades work. It's a completely different route from the characteristics." The team leader from Passau did not want to reveal where McLaren sees a need for development: "If we compare ourselves to Mercedes, then of course we have to improve everywhere. First of all, with the new parts we focus primarily on aerodynamics."

Ivan mentioned a while back that his latest work for Formula 1 proved very fruitful on the Wind Tunnel, so we can expect new parts that he characterized as "interesting shapes". I am not sure if what he mentioned is included on the Silverstone Package though.
