Didn't Tanabe say in Japan they were discussing whether to continue after 2021 and that they aren't happy with the development freeze. Maybe they come to give their decision and bad news of pulling out after this disaster start to the season after all the high hopes?
I think this is performance meeting as said. They have to talk it in a special meeting for longer partnership.

This is clearly a performance meeting indeed. Honda performance brass is there, corporate is not. But surely the current season (Effect on regulations) will affect Honda’s plans.

Would they really talk about pulling out because of the freeze? Surely F1’s management would do something to stop that from happening, not allowing manufacturers to compete and maybe locking in a permanent performance advantage for Mercedes isn’t good for anyone..

If they want to freeze development then at least allow performance to be equal because we all know how the last engine token structure failed because of a big performance gap..

Mercedes winning is Good For nercedes. Apparently that is enough. Honda had to be convinced to stay in F1 after mclaren and they have been on the fence. What can they really win.

The oilpuffing mercedes Corona frozen engine couldn’t have come at a worse moment.

Toto does seem a bit quietly concerned. He slipped a bit during the Ferrari engine interview about how hard they pushed this engine to fight Ferrari on HP, and his eyes seemed a bit wild concerning reliability.

I hope they take a few late penalties to get some kind of excitement into the races this year...😏

The pu are not frozen you can still develop the combustion chamber mguk and those areas are ripe for big performance gains .Honda has said in the past they will like to see reductions in cost so partial freeze works in their favor

Its the last thing F1 needs! Im sure redbull/Honda didnt expect to win the championship but at least be in the fight to the end?

Now its clear the Merc PU had more gains over the other 3 PU and now if that freeze is going to lock in that performance gap what motivation does Honda have in staying in F1 seeing that is doesn't look like redbull chassis/aero can close that gap.

If Honda pull out would redbull stay?

There is no complete stop in engine development . There is a list somewhere that describes what is allowed and when (over time). This means there is a partial freeze. And it isn't like Honda was kept completely in the dark about that list.
Honda also demanded a reduction in costst of future F1 engines, as Bill wrote above. And the solution was a partial freeze. Of course, if these new rules do not allow them to catch up they may have second thoughts. But let us be fair: spec 2 parts were kept from the RB16 because Honda wanted to test them more thoroughly. So the new parts are there. Probably they were developed during the time that other manufacturers had to close the doors. However, to compensate for this advantage Honda also has to close their doors in the second half of 2020 . It could therefore be that spec 2 parts will not be used before the start of 2021. So be it. They had their chances.

The only thing that surprises me is the Mercedes engine still smoking. I saw it happen in Barcelona. It smokes when they accelerate out of the corner and the rear tends to slide, e.g. if they hit the outside kerbs. Very evident in Austria, particularly on the Racing Points.
It was suggested that they could be injecting some oil to reduce turbo lag . That itself is not illegal according to the rules. Or do they use it to cool the turbine/manifold? Or could it be a side effect of controlling the engine when either of two rear wheels lose traction too much, e.g. when hitting the kerbs at 100% throttle ?

They need a strong showing at Silverstone somehow. If they get obliterated by Mercedes then I’ll be concerned.

The oil puffing is a disappointment. They talk about integrity but cheekily use oil burning and DAS to keep their advantage. Silverstone will be like last year, MB off in the distance get no coverage, main battle will be between the RPs and RBs. One of RPs will probably take out a RB.
Toto keeps mentioning it just takes 1dnf for Lewis to be back where the others are. Hopefully he's right and we see misfortune strike, or RB needs to cue the torpedo or get Alex in the mix with elbows out. We need Alex to play wingman more.

As posted in the W11 car thread by MtthsMlw the smoke is coming out of the breather pipe:

If anything, the engine would burn less oil since by the looks of it, fresh oil is chucked out of the back of the car yet it still seems to meet the FIA limits.

It is pushed out quite forcefully too. I think that pipe is coming from the crank case. It is oil smoke not just oil vapour. So likely something funky is happening.

Could it possibly be some compound added before start up for sealing or ware reduction?
Of possibly to stop seizure between tight parts with different expansion rates?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

It's blow by and oil. If you have ever toyed with old racy open breather engines they can smoke a lot worse than than, particularly when the rings are on their last legs.
