TOYOHARU TANABE
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR,

Just a few days after the British GP, we race at Silverstone again in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Last weekend three of our four cars finished in the points in tricky conditions, which at a high speed track like Silverstone is encouraging and proves we are making progress. We are now trying to improve our performance, referring to the data we acquired from our two teams last weekend. Once again, it won’t be easy race, with both teams facing strong opponents , but we’ll try to have a good race, building on the momentum from the previous one.

Mate just look at mini sector time on the straight of all cars for a good reference on power. Last year the cheating horse used to paint purple across these sector. This year Renault are up there with Merc.
Renault have a solid qualifying engine at the moment. Issue is they turn down pretty substantially during the race. That's where the Honda shines.

"Secondary Combustion" is not verified. It's only been termed by Wazari. That's what he called the crackle that started appearing late last year.

Legitimacy.. questionable... As most things are regarding speculation on matters only Honda know.

The most interesting thing ... That noise... It's curiously absent. Kvyats onboard had traces of it at the race start, but other than that, it was so prevalent end of last year and more so at testing this year, especially on downshift, it was rapid fire... Now? Gone. They must be holding something back.

It's still there in the silverstone onboards. Just sounds a little less obnoxious.

If they are holding something back it's understandable.the elephant in in the room is the chassis that is 1.2 second behind I don't understand why people are still obsessing about horsepower what difference will it make is not like Rbr is matching Mercedes.Tanabe has clear progress has been made on pu front after silverstone

What is this and where was it mentioned ?
Which part? The 2021 exhaust limit rule or Honda's "secondary" combustion (sorry it's probably not called this)? Regarding Honda's adjustment to the 2021 regulation, it was an interview with Asaki where he mentions the exhaust component limitations for the upcoming season and how to extract more power without destroying the exhaust. No one from Honda has outwardly mentioned anything about "secondary" combustion while it's been noticed that the distinct (audible) characteristic is subdued in the homologated power unit. It may still be that Tanabe wants longevity and efficiency but Marko probably wants to demonstrate maximum performance regardless of damage and then prove that changes to homologated components are justifiable with reliablity, not an increase in peak performance. I believe new materials were being considered and tested for the exhaust and this was already something in development and is on going. I'll try to find the article.
Yes what is this secondary combustion?
So if no one from Honda has mentioned it how do we know about it ?
Call it whatever you wish. We're talking about the exhaust characteristics and the audible bang/backfire/cylinder deactivation/misfire-order/blat blat blat sound thingy that the back of the Red Bull makes that supposedly damages the exhaust.

Seems to me only you are obsessed. Honda made amazing progress and made a great engines, kudos for that. But unfortunately it's less powerful then the Mercedes. Someone in this topic wrote that could be 0.4/0.5s per lap on Silverstone so there is a lot they can gain and im sure they will. So let's say it's 50/50 chassis - engine.

I can't find the video that had Asaki talking about the exhaust materials and not damaging the exhaust along with the regulation change subject, but here is the article that talks about Asaki's mission this year. He talks about being competitive at lower altitude a few times in recent interviews and mentions his goal is meet or exceed Mercedes. But he admits they are still Kings and that they are staring at Mercedes' back and thinking "They are incredible".

So now everyone is accepting that last years Renault engine is much better than this years updated Honda engine in Quali. I got slated last year when I made the observation early in 2019. Wonder where those folks are Renault? Renault have had same spec throughout, clearly they are doing something 🤔. Disappointed with Honda, no significant gains whatsoever.

All these engines talk is just boring is like we are back to Mclaren days. The three pu have converged Tanabe has already said it's difficult to tell difference so all numbers thrown around is just lies from media.

For the time being, we are not making the change at Scuderia AlphaTauri. This is because Gasly has already used a second PU from Sunday in Hungary and with Kvyat, we want to evaluate his PU following his crash last weekend."

Looks like their ‘race building momentum’ is being achieved by pushing into the second race ‘fresh’ all six elements of the power unit on both top two cars.

Hope this early engine change means they are going bolder and will bring back the loud rattling exhaust noises from pre season testing.
