Ferrari SF21 Speculation thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Narrow nose is yet another proof of Ferrari being conservative with its chassis development, they are forever followers (apart from sidepods it must be said).

Reason for high suspension arms at front + narrow nose is clear to everyone now, and whichever team could have changed it - did so. But Ferrari has carried same design of front suspension for years, saying its "OK", but Merc went into extremes and raised it + added cape and with very narrow nose had more space to play with Y250 vortex. This is now followed by most of the grid, bar Ferrari powered teams that dont have token to change it. In fact, even AT will change front of the car and spend tokens there instead of rear, says it all really.
I think its more them jumping the gun for 2021 too early rather than them being conservative. If you watch the 2019 highlights, the car was pretty okay after they added the dirty downforce at singapore. Ferrari probably thought it'll retain the engine advantage and so didn't think of pushing aero research, in preparation of 2021. Sadly, the engine regs came up. It --- them hard. Covid 19 --- them even harder.
Also, I think the lower suspension arms is a part of the Ferrari philosophy (the higher merc ones being the conservative ones).

RedBull does fine with the low suspension arms too. People are just chasing what they think are obvious visual differences.

I thought the reason Ferrari kept the lower control arm setup was because they raised the sidepod inlets with their 2017 sidepod design. Aren't the lower arms better for air flow to the inlets and thus keep them smaller.

Yeah I feel the same. People are literally starting to doubt every little thing on that car.

They were once blaming the Ferrari paint for being too shiny at one point! No lie.

Yes. When RedBull came out with the Matte paint the tifosi pressured Ferrari into doing like-wise, blaming them for not being innovative enough. Ferrari then released the Matte Paint. Maybe those tifosi cries made it to the board room?

Granted, matte paint may be lighter by a small amount. But teams have other ways of achieving that like more use of black. But yeh tifosi are very fickle when it comes to laying the blame on particular features of the car especially. And when the car cannot be blamed they move to the driver then principal then team (too Italian they say! Lol) to all sorts of things.

Idk, I quite liked the shiny livery. 2019 matte on Ferrari was good too but the 2020 one was just as faded as the car.
And quite the point there, people blame Ferrari for the blame culture and then start blaming things left and right themselves

The Tifosi is a perfect example that mob rule does not work. Not mob as in Italian mafia, but rule by the masses, it's chaos. Leadership needs to be top down, but the right people have to be in charge. Desperation and leadership is like oil and water.

Mat paint is for sponsors to be better visible, instead is disappearing in the glare.

Yeh, they have to know who to sack.

To be frank, I don't think Binotto is doing a terrible job. He doesn't boast, doesn't showboat, is very serious and to the point. You need that to steer the ship in the right direction, someone who by nature sees what's in front of his face, and acts, isn't swayed by politics because he is not political by nature. Right now for Ferrari to move forward it needs to be brutally honest with itself because that is the fastest way to see and fix what is wrong.

Although I am not his biggest fan, I did not in particular mean him, but in general Ferrari seem to have no continuity anywhere. It seems that every time there is a hiccup a head has to roll. Everyone makes mistakes, especially if they are under extreme pressure. There seems to be no tolerance to this at Ferrari, and it seems it is often the wrong head. As you point out Binnotto is getting pilloried for what are probably decisions he is executing, not making.

The direction of head rolling has not been the case for 2 years now. The new philosophy started with Camilleri and Binotto. They’ve told multiple times that their intention is not to sack anyone, but continuity. Binotto in particular told that he believes in the potential of his young team and in order for the team to deliver it’s key to hold everything together.
