It's probably A troll by the Merc PR department. Nothing seems to upset the fans of some other drivers more than the thought of their favorite driver not being able to prove he is better than Lewis.

If I was Lewis I'd probably specifically request they float rumors to troll some fans, considering the hate they spew his way.

Maybe it’s not about “i want a veto”, but more of “we cant give you 50 million or 4 years, but we are willing to give you a veto in who joins as a token to show that we want to continue this journey together.” A veto could be played as a card for more money or shares too, i.e. if they really want to sign a particular driver but Hamilton has a veto and could use that as a bargaining chip.

The whole contract negotiations are surely about things both want, but cant have (like more money, shares or 4 years), so they are finding other clauses to compensate for demands not being met.

Mercedes just announced a one year deal for Hamilton. Looks like 2021 will be his last season then. Smart move really to collect another championship this year and go out on a high.

I believe F1 insider reported it yesterday as a 1+1, option for a second year. At this stage in his career, Lewis is probably looking at flexibility, not long term, at least that’s what I think.
