McLaren MCL35M

Comparison with the W11.
Mercs rear bodywork appears tighter (or at least the upper part you can see from the top-view, but that could change with the W12 because of the new rear rad

Will be interesting to see the 35m and the W12 comparison

It appears McLaren have bought the sidepod downwash down was a lot earlier than Merc
Yeah Mclaren tighter around the centerline of the car, but with fatter hot air exits.

unfortunately no high res from the drone, but that is a sleek machine, gearbox like last year ends early and leaves a huge clean area over the diffuser, combined with the "one piece" lower rear suspension arm thats moounted forward, its just so clean

and to my surprise, they did not just update the bargeboards, like they did many times last year, no they changed the height which is surprising
I think you've been caught out by the livery. The papaya extends further down on the real MCL35M, the blue line slopes down rather than stay level as on the render. The height of the bargeboards were already maximised within the bounds of the regulations.

Re: McLaren MCL35M

yeah youre probably right about bargeboard height

And rumors about they are testing again today seem true, with a sunny pic of daniel in the car

regarding merc vs mcl, and im really not to much into that as merc are just insane, theyve been packaging this for what 5-6 years, but the mcl35m holds itself nicely i think against the w11. One aspect though, merc dont need to place so much cooling centerline to allow this narrow bodywork, mcl does, maybe its their water/air cooler that makes the difference?

no lenght comparison or anything! just indication how fast the ramp begins on the actual sidepod,I think the merc is more agressive and drops of faster
Image

And from the front, where the sidepod meets the floor, seems the mcl35m maybe a bit more narrow, more floor visible, then the w11, and the undercut especially just under the lower crash structure with its curve instead of mercs /

The Mercedes PU advantage lies in fuel and thermal efficiency more so than power, so it's apparently allowed them to reduce cooling relative to the others. I don't think it's a coincidence that McLaren have managed to sculpt those sidepods down, just confirms that generally accepted idea. To my eye there isn't much difference in terms of overall mass now. The McLaren looks more muscular, with a more defined channel down the ramp to the floor. Fingers crossed it hits the sweet spot.

In a quote from Mclaren they had stated that due to the restrictions agreed with and enforced by the FIA, they haven't been able to take advantage of all the packaging options available with the Merc engine.

But it sure does look like they have most of them. I guess that a difference would be those very tight ramps, or "haunches" on the sidepod, which I do think look very handsome, particularly on the RP where they went very extreme. Normally I'd question if they are the best solution, but since they are on the Merc - and that the RP got visibly faster when they were adopted mid season, I'd say there's a fair amount of time in that area still, which bodes as a positive for next year.

Regarding the testing today, I hope they get the opportunity to run on some slicks, not that we folks at home would hear too much about how it went, but if we had a pair of excited and smiley drivers it would be a nice sign.

Just a month to go.

It sounds a lot like the 2017 engine which would make sense since that was the last year before fom started using mics for onboards

I believe the packaging regarding the "shell" is fine as it is. They can maximize this. Problem they had is that they cannot move around parts of the chassis now that they don't have Renault engine behind it. This is probably why they have that strange bump after the halo mounting point. With Renault they had something behind so the chassis extended there but now that is redundant but couldn't be removed as it would be for performance gain.

From The Race analysis (Gary Anderson’s) of the new bargeboards in the MCL35M... It seems confirmed that there are 2 boomerangs now instead of 1, in addition to more louvres to manage front tire wake and push it away from the floor

Gary Anderson has had a honker there, that's last seasons car!

Edit: Checked the article, he does actually say it's from last year and just used it to give an example behind their thinking. Not quite sure how that correlates to the MCL35M, but it fleshes out an otherwise thin article.

Atleast he said he didn’t find anything special with the car and that gives me a lot of hope. I still remember him saying the 2018 car was a “hidden masterpiece” or something to that effect

Cool footage but kind of sad that you can't tell much in terms of driveability / pace. He's taking it too easy and the track is soaked :/
I guess we have to wait for testing to get some "proper" onboard lap.

The only little moment he had was a kick from the power unit. Guess Lando was a little rusty and pressed the pedal a little too hard :P
