McLaren Racing has become the first Formula One team to unveil their 2021 contender at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK. Named the MCL35M to underline the team's return to Mercedes power.
A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.
Ted Kravitz just said live that McLaren saying that "they have shaped their bodywork differently" so do not need/have an engine cover bump like AMR/Merc.
No disrespect to Ted, but you don't have to be a professional F1 pundit to figure that bit out.
Don't forget though that not everyone who watches F1 is as interested as we are and so they have to cater for the lowest common denominators as it w were.

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻♂️
The diffuser solution does seem to be unique to mclaren at the moment. Nice bit of innovation and thinking outside of the box of the design team.
...and very tough to copy esp. without tokens
You don't need tokens for that...
correct but there is no point just changing the diffuser? you need to make other changes to the rear end to maximize the benefit of the diffuser change and those may need tokens?

No you can update a diffuser and easily gain just doing that
After seeing the onboards McLaren sounds quite abit different to the other merc teams do they still build there own exhaust system ?
The exhaust from the heads connectes to the turbo's turbine in the back. I would think that makes it part of the PU in the hybrid era. I'm not 100% sure.

No, they are not considered part of the PU or subject to limitations on use but I believe that is changing next year. IIRC Ferrari used to change them almost always between quali and race back in 2014.

flow exactly as speculated earlier and compared to the dust pics from last year. From the big picture you can clearly see the two ramps aiding the airflow down. Thats why they dont have the bulge, theyve made it more chubby/wide to accomodate the merc and aiding the airflow i think
