McLaren MCL35M

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It was mentioned on Sky coverage that Siedl said McLaren were back to back testing different floors yesterday

Are then any pictures showing the differences?

Craig Scarborough:

Note how much downwash is occurring, even high from behind the halo, the streamlines go under the coke bottle tail.
The also not the outwash effect, streamlines right up agajnstctgs sidepod, swerve outwards across the front of the rear tyre

Also just saw flow-viz being used under the nose... Just in front of the floor...

No, though they do seem to use quite a bit (maybe more than others), we also saw the stranded Merc of Hamilton having the mirror's covered, and next to the front of the sidepod at the floor, but they use stuff that mostly shows up under ultraviolet only. Think Red Bull do the same, keeping it more secretive.

yeah it only took the sky team 1.5 day to recognize the diffuser trick, though already early yesterday it was uncovered by a twitter user, would be nice if they seeked some additional info, instead of their constant bla bla bla, sometimes its to easy to be a f1 journalist

I wonder if many other teams will have found this?

I'm not sure I see how that is beneficial though. It fences that whole central section (of expansion) off from the rest of it, which doesn't seem that desirable. :?:

MCL35 version:

Edit - Oh I see, the fence still firstly tapers inwards a bit on the MCL35M, which could work. Plus the below the step section of the floor gets it's own little "mini diffuser", very cute. :D

Do some teams not use UV, so we do not see it?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

Exactly what I was just thinking! Probably this is more like the team he thought he was joining. I hope this innovation carries on to the 2022 car, big opportunity to close in on the top 2 (3?)
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.
