McLaren MCL35M

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The flap installed on the MCL35M is used to bridge the gap between the two vertical strakes and add more definition to the flow that’s being pushed around the rear tyre.

yeah it is, significant reduction and during the hottest time a day, but when you see what merc and aston and merc are running no surprise theyve been able to slim drasticly

Why is new better? What is the main difference compared to old one?

They have placed a fence (the panels that hang down in the diffuser) either side of the central portion of the diffuser. This central section is shorter and steeper than the main part of the diffuser. It's normally "pyramidal" but the fences make it in to a narrow but steep diffuser. This ought to allow it to make some extra downforce.

old, and typical, diffuser

If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

McLaren and the red bull teams keep the hot air outlets beside the halo closed. I guss that is to keep the airflow over the sidepod to the coke bottle clean.

They will open them in hot races. It is a testing choice more than anything. Other teams want to see the "worst case" aero probably while McLaren is focusing on optimizing what they have.

Ok as a reminder, this is NOT the right place for general laptime discussion. Posts have been moved to the team thread.

Key on their diffuser design

It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, adds it to their own car. I bet everyone is already looking at it and seeing whether it's a worthwhile addition for their particular aero design.
