Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This seems to be the first (and only) picture of the rear from the testing day - from their FB page. From what you can see, it seems the same as before:

https://scontent.fltn3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/ ... e=608036AA
If that's the rear of the cars, then it's certainly radical and they were right about it being obvious what the changes were....

Can you please expand on that? I'm not as technically gifted and do not have CFD eyes, so to me this looks exactly like what they tested 10 days ago.

The picture is of the cars front on. So it's not the rear. It was a joke :)

And there's no way they are posting pictures of anything new or secret on their facebook page.

On another note, Somers came out with an interesting piece on the W12 earlier today. Seems to think Merc hasn't shown everything yet.

Haha no worries! It wasn't the greatest joke ever told, by any stretch :)
Interesting article, that. Good summary of the unknown surrounding the car.

It seems they tried a single pilon rear wing during testing and it went unnoticed?

That's interesting. I only saw them running a double- and most other teams were running a single.
But didn't they often run a single last season?

Only at circuits with a low load on the rear wing, like Monza

A few of us have been subscribing to that theory for a while now. :)

It just didn’t make sense to me that there weren’t more noticeable changes at the front wing/nose area of the car to correspond with the downstream changes.

As Somers points out, the W12 nose and cape solution on display during the Bahrain test was basically the same concept since ‘17.

Thinking out loud here, but could a single pylon high downforce rear wing be more susceptible to oscillations and thus make the rear a little unpredictable? A twin pylon set up is obviously going to be much stiffer. I'd be amazed if a team like Mercedes would design a "floppy pylon" but you never know.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Re: Mercedes W12

The purpose of the rippled floor on the Mercedes:

Image

"The general idea of these upturns on the floor’s edge are to create clockwise vortices of air which will travel down the length of the floor’s outer edge, helping seal it and thereby increasing the air pressure difference between the ambient and the underfloor, which in turn increases the downforce created by that underfloor.

At slow car speeds, as underfloor airflow speed reduces, so it becomes more difficult to seal that floor.

In low-rake cars such as the Mercedes and Aston Martin, that airflow speed will tend to slow more than on a high-rake car (like the Red Bull) which can keep the floor’s flow energised by the greater expansion angle of the floor itself. It would appear that the low-rake cars, under the new regulations which have cut the floor area, need to energise that floor more by way of these sealing vortices.

Another aerodynamic characteristic which can be more problematic for low-rake cars than high is the phenomenon of flutter whereby the airflow beneath the floor can reverberate off obstacles in a cyclic way, creating a disrupting effect unhelpful to the floor’s creation of downforce.

It might be that the revised floor shape for this year has induced this trait more readily and that the vortices from the cut-outs are better able to break that cycle."

Still nothing even close to a shot of the rear of the car! Some decent close up though, if you slow the vide down to 1/4 speed

We'll be disappointing when we see Merc turning on Friday with the same care it had during testing. I'm not believing there will be anything of this sort.

What did they spend their tokens on then? as I've mentioned before literally no one outside the team can figure out what they spent two tokens on.
