McLaren MCL35M

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I remember in the AMuS interview with James Key that was posted on here, he was asked why the MCL35M didn’t have the bulge like the Mercedes and Aston Martin. He said they’d gone with a different philosophy, and he then said that’s all he’s going to say on the matter. Made me wonder if he felt McLaren had found something more efficient.
This is the answer why the buldge doesn't show:

The top central cooler is wide, so the plumbing leading to it take up space not allowing them to make the engine cover narrow.

If the top cooler were not there you can see how much narrower the top of the engine cover would be and how the buldge would show.

Clearly it’s been a compromise in a way: probably not being able to seat/engineer the PU down as far (pushing for a lower COG as they would have been able to do if it wasn’t for the limitation of token spend.
On the other hand they then went their own way based on their philosophy of being a higher rake car and keeping some of the architecture similar but benefitting from smaller side pods. A compromise that might actually really work considering this year floor change

Tokens do not prevent them from changing and putting the centerline cooling system flat and low backwards like Mercedes, RP and Williams.
There are other reasons (ressources/time shortage, ballast shortage, this system works well, the aim to have the biggest undercut etc)

Quite. But modifications to chassis and gearbox would incur token spend, which normally go hand in hand if you really have free reign (not just on where to put the CCS). And it would probably be impossible to convince the FIA of the need to do that the work

Really really really impressive how tight the sidepod is right below the inlets when viewed head-on, the tightest of any car and by some distance

New ACS button which was only seen on Bottas's steering wheel and RP/AM's steering wheel is now on the McLaren

The front wing on the car is the 2020 spec?

Reason: removed FP timing discussion
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

The engineer mentioned it on the radio when Lando was complaining about some excess engine braking. It sounds like a toggle of some sort.
