Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Illustrates nicely how high the rake on "low rake" concept cars is.
Exactly. The way some of the talking heads in the media go on about it, you'd think the Mercedes was running its entire belly on the floor and the Red Bull was doing hand stands.
Such are the margins of millimeters in a sport where 4 tenths of a second is an eternity. :D

Have they 'McLaren-ed' it? I can't quite tell. Doesn't look like it?

Am i seeing that right, Bahrain was an inverted L shape, while Imola is a trapezoid?

Looks like it. A significant change in such a sensible area, I would say.

The Bahrain design seems odd to me. I would think it would be blatantly inferior to the Imola version to the extent that it would never have seen the light of day. Without seeing a flow model i would assume the shape would induce more turbulence and drag.

It also probably strengthens one of the vortices they have running up the side of the diffuser fences - so it's not quite that silly.

30mm is huge when the average ride height across the length of car is around 65mm. Hand stands indeed.

So few images of the car today!

Maybe they're trying to hide updates. We'll find out tomorrow morning...they'll really need big updates to beat Red Bull at Imola!

Guys, I know your opinion about the obsolete Gary Anderson but maybe it`s worth hearing what Mark Hughes thoughts about W12 issues:

In a nutshell, Gary says Merc with 2021 rules and their lower rake concept has a smaller setup window than Red Bull and high rake cars. Further more they would need to sacrifice some 2022 car development time to rectify these issues unless they`ll get hurt badly next year ...

Merc are too well run to do something like that surely. They always play for the bigger picture. I think that will only happen if they are close enough to Red Bull to take the titles this year without really impacting the 2022 development.

I don't think so, cut down RW for Bottas however, doesn't extend all the way up.

Looked as if the 'waves' were gone, but maybe I was wrong.
