McLaren MCL35M

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's just a rough comparison from differing angles, afaik the Mclaren floor is full width at the front. In fact if you look at the rear tyres instead of the line you see all the cars are using the max allowed by the regs there.

Seems Mclaren's floor are narrower than needed if this article is accurate ??

https://f1i.auto-moto.com/magazine/maga ... sagrandit/
The article doesn’t make a mention to Mclaren’s been narrower, it does state that is following the regulation “as intended”, meaning a continuous line from the widest part of the floor and that Alfa Romeo and Haas are the other 2 teams following that initiative.

If all teams are maximizing the size of the floor at the rear tire, then Mclaren’s isn’t narrower and in theory has more overall floor area (since they are not losing the area in the cutout).

What surprises me is how apparently simple the floor of the Mclaren is compared to the competition... Which if it is working, it is excellent since every single winglet creates drag ultimately and that simplicity is one of the contributing factors to how fast the car is.

That's wider not narrower.

If you look at the Turquoise Blue sections next to actual floor our's is wider & thus floor smaller / narrower...
Those are drawn poorly, the McLaren floor is as wide as it's allowed to be within the regs.

Anyone else notice ?
Seems to me to be a new engine cover,
it tapers in quite significantly over the rear suspension.

They did run two different specs in testing, do you think this is actually a 3rd spec or just the tighter/less cooling outlet size they ran in pre season testing?

Imola was very cold compared to Bahrain, I would have expected a tighter engine cover and heat exit at the rear

I don't remember seeing this spec in testing, I might have missed it though,
But its definitely quite different than the launch spec no?

Hadn’t realised quite so much metallic material is being used in the front portion of the car until this photo. Quite impressive workmanship to integrate all the mixed materials.

Doesn't really say all that much per sé, those numbers would be affected by a lot of things, all different for the different traps.

afaik McLaren deploys their ERS really early on, and such mappings can really affect those numbers

I have not seen such a thing before. Perhaps this is indeed McLaren's find.

The inward portion of the endplates is new for 2021, but not for Imola... The new endplates were present in the renders of the car at launch.
