Was wondering whether they would do that, given this is race 6 and you want to give it the full beans down that massive straight. Excellent reliability so far anyway.
You can keep more than one engine in the “pool” AFAIK. Maybe they want to put an higher engine mode this weekend and for that need a “fresh” engine.
Yes of course, that's what I was referring to. Use the new engine for maximum attack this weekend, and save the older one for use at a less power-sensitive track later in the year.
I don't think we really know how much freedom customer teams have in their choice of engine mode. Listening to the Matthew Carter episodes on the Missed Apex podcast, I've learned the answer is/was less than one might think.

Is it me, or does it seem like we’re not particularly great around here?

well, if you think that an Alfa truly belongs in front of a McL or a Merc down in P16 - then yes

Car looks OK, but not great. I think it is compounded by the fact that Ferrari look very strong.

We may be holding back, and probably we are, but enough to be the third fastest team here? I hope so, but I have my doubts right now.

Looks like Mercedes powered teams have the PU turned down a bit more, especially since they've all taken on new units this weekend. It's very hot out there, possibly not taking any chances. As ever, FP3 will give a better picture.

Im pretty sure mclaren will be thereabout, but ferrari seem stronger then expected, seem they really ;-) unlocked their car.
Further i like their approach of running lighter all the way through fps, why hold back, when its so tight, gives the drivers a chance to gain confidence and get the best out of the car, im sure mclaren has their reasons, but eehmmm...

This is a fair point but maybe that drivers may get more confidence if they get progressively faster from session to session and know that they have something in their back pocket.

It looks like there was more emphasis on race prep in FP2 than finding all out pace. It's better that way, because then you always have the race in the back of your mind and you can spend Saturday on extracting maximum performance from your package.

They were definitely trying a few things out too, but so were other teams.

But all this said and done, this is Baku, safety cars and action will be aplenty.

They (particularly Daniel) sound confident in the post friday reaction. Let's not get down after practice. We literally have the same "disappointment" talks after every friday, and then we are surprised by the good performance on saturday/sunday.

Laptimes today don't matter, lets wait for tomorrow.
