Toyoharu Tanabe

Honda Racing F1

This was the first day of practice at a permanent race track since the Spanish Grand Prix weekend in early May.
We had fine weather with relatively high air and track temperatures during the sessions, particularly in the afternoon.
For this race, at Red Bull Racing Honda, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez ran new PUs, as did Pierre Gasly at Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda and we had no major issues throughout the day, going through the basic programme and function tests for a new PU, in addition to the usual job of gathering data. It looks as though the competition will again be very close with our nearest rivals. In this situation very small gaps can make a big difference to the final result, so we will be paying close attention to the smallest details with both our teams to optimise our PU performance for qualifying and the race.

Spec is the same as only reliability upgrades are allowed; however, if more reliable, it can be pushed Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger ..

I asked that question in the Honda power unit thread page 1219. You might want to check out the responses there...

Is the update coming to France an update to improve reliability so the current spec can be turned up to full tilt boogie, or did they find more power in the new spec and it can run full tilt boogie out of the box?
No in-season development allowed, only reliability fixes
The engine freeze only kicks in at the start of 2022. A new engine this year can still feature performance upgrades.

If you quote, then also quote Steven responding later when he read the rules and saw 'no performance upgrades allowed in-season'

According to AMuS Hamilton has asked for Verstappen to be penalized. FIA said ‘no’. This with regards to the whole Pirelli saga. Can someone tell Hamilton that Max DNFed in Baku? And it seems we are now seeing the true person behind the constructed media person called Hamilton.

Race simulations on Friday only last half a dozen laps, and there the Red Bull looked competitive, the problem is that the Mercedes comes into its own towards the latter half of the stint

Super lap there from Max. =D> Hope Checo can jump Bottas as he is too slow and cannot keep up with Max and Lewis. It would then be a good race. Amazing to see Red Bull better Mercedes in one of Mercedes' strongest track so far.

Good job by Red Bull. That car is definitely in a sweet spot setup wise. And with a mega lap by Max. Wondering whether the Honda engine was run on a higher mode.

Horner said in the interview: we are using a smaller rear wing than Mercedes. And: 'if we van beat them here then really we can beat them anywhere.'

Wondering how the race pace. From FP2 I thought Merc is a few tenths faster on the mediums.
