Diesel History

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Diesel History

Post

Was looking through a book about inventions. It seems that the diesel engine was invented befor the year 1900 or thereabouts. Forgot the inventors name, but it would be an interesting read on his research. I think he was a Frenchmen. Anyone interested in this info?

Thanks,
Gear

His name was Diesel...Rudolf Diesel!

If I'm not mistaken the first prototype was built in the first half of the 1890's.

As we had discussed same with some friends, want just add to Monstros
post that allthough the name Rudolf Diesel sounds pretty German
he indeed was a Frenchman born in Paris .His parents immigrated to France from Bavaria,Germany.
He got his patent for the Diesel engine in 1894 and run the first successful
engine in 1897.
What would R.Diesel have thought about this engine? :)

gear dawg,

Cummins raced a diesel engine in the Indy 500 back in the 50's and someone (Ricardo?) raced a VW V10 diesel at the LeMans 24 hour last year.

Hi riff_raff,
Check my previous post which had also a link to the Ricardo-Judd V10 diesel engine. But as also to be checked from the link you have posted it certainly was not a VW V10 and the engines roots are to be found in the former Judd F1 engine .
