Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Both Mercedes drivers opted for the lighter option, including no T-Wing.
Bottas' rear wing has a gurney flap.

Here's a nice view of the new, split pontoon/side pod deflectors (along with the new floor furniture and barge board tweaks):

As another poster pointed out, a similar update was brought on the W10 around Germany, I think?
It will be interesting to see how much more time they can squeezer out of this upgrade, when they actually have time to try and optimize the set-up. With only 60 minutes to test out the upgrades, and get the car ready for qualifying, they can't possibly have gotten everything out of it.

Completely agree. It also may unlock a better development path for whatever bits they have left, now that they know this new package is much more efficient (but still provides the stability they need).

It was very encouraging to see both drivers opt for the smallest RWs of the season, with no t-wings.

Because unless there’s more going on than we’ve seen, I can’t see how such a modest update has improved the car to the point it’s on par with the red bull

Maybe if the car was performing ok a 'small' update won't do much.

But it's possible there was a fault with the aero and this is more of a fix than a small update.

Agree. It’s highly likely track conditions (much cooler track for qualifying) and traxk layout (front-limited) just went Merc’s way, rather than this upgrade being a magic bullet.

This is exactly what it was!

They probably can preset multiple setting behing that one button. So in one press go to different engine braking, diff entry settings, brake balance etc, just setup for a single corner of section or corners.

Is it me or we didn`t look at the big picture:

It`s not the high rake we`ve seen at RB but due to their longer wheelbase they don`t need that angle to achieve the same volume under the diffuser

It`ll be nice to see a side-by-side comparison between the two teams high rakes and these updates must correlate with the changed rake, don`t they?

Right. Wasn't it Scarbs saying that Merc has lost more due to the regulation mandate on rear brake winglets. Not having that extended lower hurts Mercedes but doesn't change much on high rake due to the diffuser angled closer to them. I know it's been discussed already but thought it should be hammered home

Edit found it. Around 3:30.
