I remember McLaren saying it takes time to fine tune/prove the wind tunnel once the hardware is built, so if it’s going to be online for the development of the 2024 charger then I guess they could be completed around the same time, maybe McLaren's could be slightly earlier

Does anybody here have any updates on the Mclaren wind tunnel by any chance? Pictures of construction? The Building? Foundations? How far they are along? Anything at all?

this is what I've been curious about... what stage in development is the wind tunnel, and I understand covid and everything, but what's so damn special about Mclaren's wind tunnel that its taking so long to build in comparsion to AM

anyway I reckon likely the wind tunnel is going to be ready around late 2022 to early 2023, ready for 2024 car, does anyone know if this is a completely new wind tunnel, or if they are changing the existing one?

I didn't know they gonna be banned. Anyway advantageous until and let's not forget they build some pretty nice road cars and also other series of motorsports. There's always the chance to rent it out for anyone who wants.

There is a potential ban on windtunnels by 2030. So it might not even happen only time will tell. So yes Mclaren definately needs a wind tunnel if they want to be able to compete on equal terms with Merc, Ferrari and Redbull especially till the year 2030.

I do believe that for independent teams renting out their windtunnel is a steady source of income and probably pays for most of its investment

This is bad news and good news. Seems Mclaren needs 2 more years to catch up wind tunnel and infrastructure.
Good news is that with such a disadvantage they are still competing with Ferrari and gotten much closer to Redbull and Merc. Imagine what Mclaren will be capable of by 2024 when they are competing with Redbull, Merc and Ferrari on equal terms! Exciting times ahead!

excited for Hungary... Ferrari will be very quick, but in these maximum downforce tracks the McLaren is also no slouch, If I remember correctly the car last year was losing a lot of time around the last corner, hopefully there are some improvements

Hungary was one of the most problematic tracks for McLaren last season and Ferrari had a much better weekend… I’m afraid that Ferrari will outpace McLaren at Hungary… Although I hope that isn’t the case!

A state of the art wind tunnel is not only essential for the F1 team but for McLaren's broader plans as a whole. The road cars they make are so fast that they pretty much need their own dedicated wind tunnel just for that. McLaren is still McLaren. I always saw McLaren as cutting edge precision engineering, that is essentially art. I don't see the wind tunnel as a liability if it lets them do their thing.

This article is about Verstappen, but I'm posting it as I recently pointed out some comparisons in the current breed of F1 cars, saying that the earlier brakers seem to be able to take corners faster.

Lando broke more than Ric and Verstappen more than Lando, yet Verstappen was quickest through the corners and DR slowest. This comparison was also true of Vettel and Stroll and Ver and Perez.
