I think the team should just replace everything and take up as many penalties as possible. Also they will be able to predict weather conditions a bit more accurately and maybe finetune the setup

The sad part is that the team put a new PU (3rd one) in the car for this race. Also starting from the pit will keep him safe from another Valteri torpedo or any other 1st corner incidents :)
Agreed- just start Lando from the pit lane with 5 brand new PU elements- even if the PU isn’t damaged- just take the hit and get them in the pool👍🏻

Wow props to the mechanics if they actually managed to salvage that thing. Gearbox was obviously trashed for sure, but looking at the state of the car after the crash I would have expected more.

Edit: To be honest, I am not sure if starting P14 is better than a pitlane start (unless the start is under a safety car). The bottom 6 cars are quite slow, and Lando can easily get through them anyway. Being out of a potential first lap incident seems like the safer option to me (especially after Hungary PTSD)

God dam it! Lando had the pace in those conditions for POLE! .... the rest is history now. From this point, I hope Lando starting P14 and RIC starting P4 can avoid accidents at the start and race hard till the flag, we need some good points tomorrow.

The problem is that even though passing the bottom six cars should be easy… If the conditions are challenging tomorrow as expected, you can also be taken out by one of the backmarkers… There is risk both ways

I agree, think it's a mistake not starting from the back with a new PU (if it's wet tomorrow). Imagin if he retires after the first few laps cause of PU troubles. Then face the possiblity of a PU penalty for the next race. I mean this is SPA, you'll get past the bottom 5 cars on the first lap...So I don't get it.

There is that the 4th unit is not part of the contract with Merc. That it is a unbudgeted expense.

Let's not jinx it guys. Fingers crossed for a clean start first of all and then I am sure Lando and the car if the conditions are the same has the speed to clear up everyone quickly.

If it’s looking like a wet race they need to start from the pit lane with a fresh 4th PU no matter what contract they have

Light showers by the looks of it, nothing too heavy.

I'm hoping Lando can get to the top ten on lap 1 and push on.

He's going to get a lot of tows in an already fast car tomorrow.

Sorry I meant they might not want to spend more $$$$ for PU 4. 3 is included with their deal/budget. #4 is extra.

yeah, I was wondering if a major consideration would have been budget seeing as they will want every penny available for next years car - still, on the face of it seems quite a risk seeing as a decent chance of good points even if starting from pitlane.
edit - having read further on it, seems they are reserving judgement on the engine and will switch to the Hungary engine if need be which will avoid further penalty

You could make the same argument for a dry race too

That way they can put on a lower down force setup

I’m 101% certain that Lando would have gained the pole….
To finish first, first you must finish.

In difficult conditions, experience frequently comes out on top. It’s a real shame tho, Nozza was doing an incredible job up till that point.

I think Daniel's performance was very strong and I think what it shows as just what level Lando is performing at right now.
