Whats the difference now going to Monza?
11.5 points...

After Monza I feel the gap may shrink but after that it’ll just continue to grow
Is it really a bad thing losing 3rd to Ferrari we get more r&d/wind tunnel time by doing so this season isnt about finishing third which don’t get me wrong would be good but everyone’s seems to loose focus of the matter this season is the last of these technical regulations right now we should not be focusing on beating Ferrari out focus should now be on next years car, if they want to continue throwing valuable resources at an obsolete car that won’t be used again just to finish p3 let them do so at the end of the day it’ll hurt them more next year an only benefit us. So to be perfectly honest it doesn’t really matter if they take p3 it doesn’t matter next year does .
That is true. Even if we finish 4th it's best if we start as early as possible on the design of the next car and we will have more time on the aero than those in front. I can easily sacrifice 3rd this year if next years car fights for the championship or if James Key pulls a 1998 Andrian Newey or a 2014 Ross Brawn and produces a rocket.

Can Ferrari upgrade the engine in terms of HP? I though they couldn't do that cause I remember Mercedes appealing in regarding Honda's engine upgrade.
Apparently, they can… This season you aren’t supposed to introduce performance upgrades to the engines, but for what I’ve read, Ferrari may have found a loophole in the regulations… They are still running 2020 parts on their engine and therefore they can introduce there “2021” parts still and they will do so when they introduce their next PU… So yes, it seems Ferrari will be able to introduce upgrades to their engine that will increase their HP

3rd is important for McLaren than Ferrari due to money alone. Binotto has repeatedly stated that 3rd isn't important. They most likely won't be 3rd after Monza anyway.

As for throwing valuable resources at their car, I think McLaren's development thus far has far exceeded Ferrari's. Ferrari's PU upgrade is more in focus for 2022 than trying to "win" anything this season.

There isn't much to analyze to be honest. Now that we came to the track and saw it in person, it just screams McLaren weakness all over.

There are fast corners here, but they are almost flat for everyone, there's nothing to gain. McLaren can gain something on fast corners which require some sort of braking so they can exploit that rear-end stability (corners like Puohon, or Austria T7 and onwards etc).

Here, the fast corners are either flat, or need just a lift. Then there's the slow corners, which are horrible for McLaren. And the very long medium speed corners, which are even more horrible for McLaren. They were so down low in speed traps as well because they strapped so much downforce on that thing to compensate somewhat and still were so slow. It's an inherent weakness that it too strong to go around with setup.

They just have to deal with it in these sort of tracks, and make the best out of tracks which are advantageous. Obviously to have a chance to do that, we have to race in those type of tracks to begin with, but tough luck I guess.
They may have just not gotten the setup right, as simple as that… In a track slower than this one (Monaco) they actually surprised everyone with good performance.

A bad weekend, I’m sure the team will learn a few things from it and hopefully come back strong in the following races… The MCL35M is still a car that is fighting for P3 in the WCC and that’s quiet an achievement… A mix of track characteristics, the fact that this is a very hard track to overtake and both drivers seemingly not in the rhythm made the team have their worst race of the season so far (in terms of pace at least, because Hungary’s result can’t be blamed on the car)… Nothing is lost yet.
I don't think that this track is slow, certainly not comparable to Monaco.

Forgot who said it further back but there isn't much hard braking at this track. Lando uses that to generate DF at the front and pivot the car.

Even if we do well at Monza who’s to say we carry the momentum to the end of the season ? We’ve stopped development now albeit a few minor tweaks for the remainder of the season I expect Ferrari to take control of the second half an I welcome them to do so as yes we don’t get as much prize money but we do get more r&d/wind tunnel time which I’d take over a bonus cheque anyday of the week

To be honest, Ferrari has been far more consistent this year. They have had tire problems, but in terms of pace, they have always been at the sharp end of the midfield. We have had Daniel exploring Williams territory quite a lot of times, but I don't even want to get into that because it's obvious he has had a lot of problem this season, but even for Lando, this is the 3rd / 4th time where he hasn't had the car to put on a fight against Ferrari.

If this PU upgrade is as substantial as Italian sources make it out to be, I am afraid there will no longer be a fight for P3 at all. McLaren has underdelivered this first half when they have had the advantage. We have been fighting while walking with crutches because one of the drivers could not deliver this year. I don't want to get into reasons right now, as I said, but the truth is Daniel's inability to adapt has cost the team tens of points, and that's just a fact no matter how protective of Daniel you want to be. He could be the best driver of the field next year, but the fact is, if we lose P3 this year, it's because of him.

I don't want to be too pessimistic just yet, because there are a lot of races left. And there were races like Austria where McLaren (Lando) could mix in with the top. So even if Ferrari's PU upgrade proves to be considerable, we may still get some chances to put on a fight. Even though I am confident that even if we do put on a fight, it's going to be only with one car as I have completely given up any hope of Daniel picking himself up for this year.

Total defeatist attitude to say it's ok to lose 3rd to FERRARI of all teams and use some extra wind tunnel time as a reason. It will never be ok to lose a championship finishing position. The little extra wind tunnel time won't really matter in the end as there are so many other variables during a long season. There will be no silver lining losing 3rd. Good thing is that McLaren are in a much better place and faster than a lot of people thought and are well set for 2022. They have been making some very smart decisions recently and hopefully that mindset has transferred to 2022.
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

Ferrari defenetely not putting anything on this year project ..McLaren had the advantage in the 1 st half but their 2nd driver never turned up.Ferrari has been consistent..with the PU upgrade coming , McLaren can write off the 3rd postion in the standing..

I don't agree with them, but it is clearly a strategic comment and not defeatist

I wouldn't count the chickens before they hatch. We all know time and time again that the Italians exxagerate regarding anything about their car. I am pretty sure the Mercedes Engine will still be superior not to mention hearing that Mercedes has found something extra. Mclaren can still have the upper hand to the battle for 3rd.

I love your optimism but Ferrari only need to find a small amount of HP and they’ll be ahead of Mclaren at most of the remaining circuits. Currently I believe they are neck and neck at best!

Who's to say that Mercedes can't find more HP to the engine. After all they had the best engine from 2014 knowing every loophole and were always a step ahead of Ferrari.

Daniel was not happy at all with the strategy. Was clear from post race radio/interview.
He was told to slow down to hold Rus/Str so Lando could come back in front after his pit. Maybe they could consider switching positions back in the end of the race, as Lando was not able to get ahead of Alpines.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. It was just one point anyway and it doesn't really matter who gets it. Might as well give it to Lando since he is kind of in a fight with Perez in the championship.
