Any ideas, opinions why they failed to be the fastest again, like in Monaco?
I have 2:
- their setup simulation is skewed to lesser track conditions, hence they look fast on friday, and fall back saturday sunday
- some big errors regarding tire management, baked in to their systems. When it matters they overheat or can not get it to temp
I believe the main problem was the lack of speed on the only straight where overtaking was possible.
They sacrificed straight-line speed for cornering speed, but this choice only works if you qualify at the front and get a good start, not if you end up in traffic.
We know the ICE is not the best, and this is a significant factor, so perhaps they should have opted for a setup with slightly less downforce, even though that could have proven critical for the tires, which would have had less grip and, consequently, greater degradation.
To sum up, as we say in Italy, the blanket is too short; no matter how you pull it, you end up uncovered somewhere.
I also wouldn't underestimate the strategic error of pitting once the VSC was deployed, especially knowing how important track position was, given that overtaking was nearly impossible.
