Well done Yuki, but an absolutely awful strategy for Dan pitting him after just 7 laps into a DRS train behind Kmag who is in one of the fastest cars in a straight line which ruined his race. Not to mention making him do an extra pitstop. He was faster than Yuki in clean air most of the race as evidenced by also making up over half a pitstop on Yuki before getting blue flags in the last few laps of the race.

Dan was not happy on the radio and Pierre apologised. The team threw away a double points finish today.
If Alonso or Hamilton for example who has a lot of experience in F1 was told to pit so early out of the blue they would have questioned it and most likely refused unless a very good reason given. Ric with over 10 years experience in F1 did not question it and refuse to pit so early? I think Ric needs to take some responsibility here.
Do we have any information on this tho? I can’t find any team radio for Daniel at all.

The team have apologised for the poor strategy, which suggests Daniel wasn’t in favour of it.

He asked the team on the radio to keep on eye on the cars suggesting to do something differently as he was stuck in a train. His race engineer said, "loud & clear". Nothing before or after that. Then they boxed him and was told there is fight when he is out. On his out lap, KMag completed an overtake on the outside of T2!!! Daniel didn't defend it by going slightly wider like Lewis did to Max. It's on him. Every team apologizes to protect a driver, even Red Bull were doing for Max. That doesn't mean a driver couldn't have done better. They took the decision based on what they saw and felt as the right thing to do. Post race, in the hindsight, every team feels they could have done differently. That's not an excuse or saying they made a mistake with full knowledge of it. This culture of blaming the team to protect the favorite driver has gotten our of hand. Mercedes, Red Bull and here in VCARB.

Dan wasn't in favour but they left him too late to query it. He can't see all the data so very risky to overrule the team. Terrible decision my the strategists to pit him. Dan put in a massive 40 lap stint last year on the mediums. He had the pace and tyre management to do very well here.

"Ricciardo said he knew the call to pit was the wrong one straight away, but explained it came far too late – as he rounded the corner immediately before the pit entry – for him to argue the point.

"It's a late call, box, box, box, and you pit," he said.

"Honestly, as soon as I'm pulling in the pits I'm questioning it, but you can't (do anything about it).

"You get called in ... and you have to react."

Your argument doesn’t stack up! Albon and KMag stopped on lap 7, Daniel and Fernando stopped on lap 8.

The hard tires are very hard to defend on straight out of the pits, KMag had a big tire temp and thus grip advantage.

This is nonsense. They threw him to the wolves without even giving Dan any time to query it. Dan said so himself in that quote I posted. The team have all the data. Heck they even saw that massive 40 lap stint he did last year on the mediums. In what world did they think pitting Dan after just 7 laps into traffic was a good idea?? Pure team strategy stupidity..

An experienced driver failed to challenge the team like other drivers do. Thst was the argument. He should have challenged it and continued in the train.

It’s irrelevant, do you really not understand the relationship between tire temperature and grip? Especially with the hard compound tires, they need a lap to come up to temp!

That's irrelevant to the original argument of Daniel having been unable to challenge the team's decision for pitting him early like other drivers do, if that strategy was wrong. He should have chosen to continue in the train to avoid being overtaken by KMag

Dan got put out in that position by the team he had no chance to query it properly. No point complaining about it after it happened when he is out on track. The Haas was the fastest through the speed trap while Yuki and Dan were slowest. Alonso another one of the fastest in the speed trap was also at the head of that train compounding the problem. No way was he getting by Kmag for a start. Dumb team decision to put him in that DRS train.

Seriously, do you really not pay attention to how F1 racing works? When you get a late pit call, you do as instructed! For all the driver knows, there could have been a crash and the safety car is likely to be deployed, or any number of other scenarios that the team feel they need to act on immediately to take advantage of!

Daniel did not have time to discuss the bad call, and he came out of the pit’s on cold tires, he was a sitting duck for KMag who had a lap to get his up to temp!

This isn’t 5 years ago when the teams could pre-heat tires to 100c before bolting them on. They are limited to 70c now, so please, stop embarrassing yourself with factually vacant opinions!

I’m not attacking you personally, I’m attacking the lack of facts behind your conclusions.

This is the F1Techical forum, not Autosport. I get that you’ve only been on this forum since March this year, but you’ve been provided with the facts multiple times and ignored them. You either don’t want to learn, or are trolling.

Meaningless comparison,Yuki was the only driver who did one stop.Theoretically 2 stop was the fastest strategy here,so of course Yuki would be slower in race pace. For someone who had to run his mediums in 30 laps, everyone know he will be slower in pure race pace, especially in terms of data statistics.
I know you love Ric,but Yuki finished the race with 2 points and ahead of two Astion Martin, which was a amazing job and we should appreciate it.

I guess the compulsive obsession to defend a particular driver's poor performance is worthy of F1technical.
