The bodywork was cracked though - exposing the exhaust to the outside conditions.
Would the exhaust being exposed meant it cooled quicker in the dry than if it was still covered/undamaged?

If it was still covered/undamaged it would indeed cool less quick, BUT it would NOT need that extra cooling. The internals have heat resisting materials that can cope with those higher temperatures. With the exhaust that much exposed, the external parts, which aren't that heat resistant, would have catched fire if the temperature remained the same.
