I for one will miss JPM. He has done some of the best passing moves in F1. Most notably around the outside of MS at the European GP several years ago.

I think the move to NASCAR says a bit about him. He doesn't want to be making up the numbers at RBR etc. but rather taken out of the 'comfort zone' and sieze a new challenge.

All the best.

I can't believe it...

With Prodrive ready to enter F1 (2 available seats), with at least one seat available at Red Bull (possibly even 2), 1 at BMW (?), and maybe one or two thanks to the mess created by McLaren, Renault and Ferrari, how is it possible that he was unable to find a drive. Understandably, perhaps he doesn't want to drive for Prodrive, but any of the other options are decent!

There was even a rumor that Frank Williams had offered him a drive:

http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/28230/

(check the 2nd last paragraph)

So, can we assume that Webber is going somewhere? His contract is up at the end of this season, and if the rumor is right, it would have to be him. So, where? Renault? Doubtful despite Flavio connection! Ferrari? Too many drivers, not enough cars! McLaren? Could it be? If so, he wouldn't get more than a 1 year contract...just enough to keep the seat warm for Hamilton.

Wow This awsome. I will get to see JPM allot more. He will be where he is appreciated and given equal oppertunity to win. For Chip Ganassi it will be great that he will finally have a world class driver for his cup team instead of these guys who think they could race.
I would not expect JPM to start winning right away, but he will win. I will bet the formula 1 world and especially the drivers will be watching and be moving over there. Aside from F1 there is only Nascar.
Man I can't wait... :D :D

The trouble with the rat-race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.

To those who have an idea of NASCAR, Chip Ganassi is also known as "Cheap" Ginasssi, where many believe his expenditures toward his NASCAR effort has been shy a few dollars. I expect Montoya to expect and demand to engineering, equipment, and support. To be honest, I think Montoya's salary has tightened Ginassi's wallet even more. I expect JPM to wither and die in a team that doesn't spend on engineering and development.
Strange co-incidence that Toyota is jumping into NASCAR Cup racing at the same time. Hmm, will Ginasssi go Toyota?

The Williams seat would probably have been a test driver role. I doubt Webber will join Renault next year, but who knows.

Sad, sad day...

You will probably laugh at me, but I have to say that for me this is one of the many signs that Formula One really started to lack racing spirit.

And it is not only because of the rules, it is because many of the fans want it to be so. We talk about the great past combats in F1, but what else was Montoya trying to do? Race. We've seen what was the result... and heard and read the reactions...

Sorry for my ranting, but I must say it was JPM who made me believe F1 is worth watching in 2001. There are more great drivers, but this saddened me.

Glad to see someone sees it as a good thing. It will be difficult for me to watch NASCAR, but I'll try.

I do agree on that. All JPM does is race. He may seem indifferent at times, and has had a bad habit lately of making contact with other cars. In another topic the spirit and competitiveness of drivers was discussed. There are so many F1 drivers who lack that true competitiveness, willingness to go for the difficult move. Shu has it, and so does Montoya, and JV. Sadly, even Sato has it (his reach exceeds his grasp).
Montoya will leave, and F1 will be poorer because of his parting. I will miss JPM more than Shu, when that sod retires.

Such a shame - he should be in a Grand Prix car.

On the bright side, he's followed his heart - I hope he really enjoys RACING again..

Absolutely agree with Dave (even Sato!). At least there are some young Turks coming up now. Rosberg knows how to race, Lewis Hamilton has shown us some great wheel/wheel stuff, Luizzi - there's even a chap called Bruno Senna looking quite good right now.

That's not that much of his fault. He didn't cause any of that accidents. At least not directly. It just illustrates what I mean.

Very Sad Day.
The only rason for every weekend see de Formula 1 was Montoya.
He's the very best sportsman in all Colombia's history, so i don't think that our country will have somebody like JPM.

The championship will never be the same, Montoya has raced 137 times in cart, IRL and Formula 1, he won 18 races, did 60 poles and he finished 60 times into the top 5, so in the actual time, Who won Indianapolis and race in Europe????

Schumi will never forget him and Renault lose the way to get the championship again.

I'm very happy for him, i know about his abilities and i hope to see him wining again like in Indianapolis.

A great great loss to our sport.

Not nessecarily a great driver, but a bloody fast one on his day, a great entertainer and a real character. I for one will miss him very very much.

Maybe I might actually take a small interest in NASCAR from now on???
