After signing up to a host, they sent me an email which includes my hosting information.

Here is the necessary informations.

You can manage your FTP account(s) inside your Hosting Control Panel (check your FTP Manager section).

[IMG:150:123]http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/3362 ... cl6.th.jpg[/img]

First i need a domain. And this hosting company provides subdomians in its original domains for free.

i get my subdomain
[IMG:150:128]http://img486.imageshack.us/img486/9277 ... rm4.th.jpg[/img]

then to run a php based forum you need a database installed, i created my mysql database

[IMG:150:128]http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/1333 ... rq4.th.jpg[/img]

i took the important infos somewhere else for ex. db host, db name etc. in the table.

Uploading!

if your host has an oppurtunity of turning on or off the php server, please turn it on in this step.
Get a pratic ftp client
i used smart ftp (My cute has expired:) (but smart ftp is really smart)
Can be downloaded here.
http://www.download.com/SmartFTP-Client ... tag=button

then upload your phpBB directory from your machine to the host
you need to use your ftp account infos given by your hosting company.

[IMG:150:128]http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/5788 ... ep7.th.jpg[/img]

For Smart ftp its very easy to upload:) after getting connected, you only drag & drop the phpBB directory to smart's temporary queue part, it prepares for the upload then takes the files to Transfer Queue after that you simply press "Play" button to start uploading process.

[IMG:150:128]http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/9388 ... tr1.th.jpg[/img]

Next you finished your uploading.

With your ftp client you should correct the directories' chmod to 755 which are in the main directory.
List

-admin
-cache
-db
-docs
-images
-includes
-language
-templates

Sellect those dirs and right click on them / set chmod to 755.

[IMG:150:128]http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1161 ... dk2.th.jpg[/img]

then its ready to install dont close your client because we'll need it for some precations.

Go to your phpBB adress using your explorer for ex. go 'hakkinen.awardspace.com/phpBB2/'

An installation page appears

[IMG:150:128]http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/9350 ... cy8.th.jpg[/img]

You should fill them by using your account infos.

[IMG:150:128]http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/3821 ... ks8.th.jpg[/img]

Board language:English
Database Type: Most of the hosting comp. s uses 4x so choose mysql 4x
Installation method: Install
DBS hostname:You can look from your database manager or account info mail.
DB name:You can look from your database manager or account info mail.
dbusername:the name of your data base which was given before
dbpassword:yourdb password you can be changed from your database manager.
prefix:dont change
Admin mail:your mail
Domain: if you have a domain like http://www.yourname.com please type if not your subdomain.
server port: don't change
Script path: dont change if you have installed your forum like domain.com/phpBB2/. else if domain.com/forum/phpBB2/ then here is must be /forum/phpBB2/ etc.
admin username:your username which has the administration acces to the board in the board.
passes:you choose :)

After all press start install.

then it should look like
[IMG:150:128]http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/7691/voilavh8.th.jpg[/img]

if itsn appeared like that pm me.

Then you should delete the 'contrib' and 'install' directories or rename them by an unique name which is known only by you because if someone reaches those folders he can reinstall your forum whith his administrive acces.

then press finish installation
[IMG:150:128]http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/1803 ... qx1.th.jpg[/img]
the board is on your screen...

If any questions. I'll try to help...

OK :D PHPbb is good as well, you have such a lot of geeks who make extensions for it, it's massive and it's all free! I can't recall why I stopped using it though.

If you want to set up a whole community with a member system with members-only pages there are ways to do it with PHPbb, however joomla and that sort of stuff is a lot more user-friendly.
